Going to visit Texas
We are looking at visiting Texas this April. Man o man that's a big state. Would love to hear about some locations to visit and campgrounds to stay in. We may have to add some time. Thanks.

It takes about two days to drive north to south and 3 east to west [depending on speed/stops] so it might help to list some interests.

El Paso is closer to San Diego than to Beaumont, TX. And Beaumont is closer to Jacksonville, FL than to El Paso. Over 800 miles between El Paso and Beaumont. Likewise, over 800 miles between Perryton (in the panhandle) to Brownsville. That is a lot of country.
I agree on San Antonio. Riverwalk, mission trail, mercado, Sea World, zoo are all worth a visit. Travelers World RV Resort is a good place to stay. Easy drive to downtown from there with parking near the Riverwalk. Or there is a bus stop right in front to take you there if you prefer.
Texas hill country towns of Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Llano, Mason, Borne, with their German history and architecture. And in Fredericksburg, the National Museum of the Pacific War is great if that interest you. Very well done. And they have live reenactments several times each year with guns, explosions, flame throwers, armored vehicles, etc for effect. Fredericksburg RV park is very nice and convenient.
Palo Dura Canyon just south of Amarillo is also a great place to visit. Stay in the canyon if you go. Full hookups. You can try for the free steak at the Big Texan steak house in Amarillo.

Early to Mid April is an ideal time to see the wildflowers, especially Texas Bluebonnets, in this whole area. We usually stay at the KOA in Fredericksburg. We do not often choose KOAs, but this is the campground we prefer above all others in the area.
April is also a good time to visit in North East Texas (my home). Great campgrounds at Caddo Lake State Park, Tyler State Park, Daingerfield State Park and many others. Tyler SP now has sites with full hook-ups. We also have wildflowers, but not bluebonnets.
My suggestion for April would be to spend some days in East Texas then move on down to the Hill Country. Save the rest for other visits.

We prefer the hill country between Austin and San Antonio but not too close to either one. Agree, the western hill country can keep you occupied for the entire winter, the locals are real Texas friendly, snd the weather is generally pleasent.

Palo Dura is a great place to see and camp, plan on a day just to hike around there. Nice camp grounds. And reasonable $$$.

We live in San Antonio--so we think it is a great place to visit! Great golfing and bike trails or hiking trails, historic sites, FOOD, weather is great except in August. Come on down, and spend some time here to enjoy everything. Travelers World looks like a great location--next door is the Riverside golf course and the Mission Trail bike path. Have fun!
