Steel wool to start a fire?
Many have suggested using steel wool to plug holes and keep rodents out of the rig in the winter. My guess is that many of us didn't know steel wool can, under the right circumstances, cause a fire. This is a good thing for people to know. You especially don't want to use steel wool in openings with electrical wires passing through. I know this

This is where the phrase of flint and steel came from for starting fires. As a Boy Scout we always carried some type of flint for the spark and some steel wool to start our fires. Worked better than matches!!

Great Stuff foam works much better and keeps air out. No matter what you use you are not going to keep the mice out.

Dick, most of the posts that I saw for using steel wool for filling holes stated to use course wool and now 000 or 0000. 0000 can spontaneously combust if it gets wet. Rust is just slow burning (oxidizing) but can produce enough heat to flame. See for yourself, take a ball of 0000 and a ball of course wool and light both with a match. The fine will burn fast and hot, but the course takes almost a continuous flame to continue burning. That said I personally would use foam to fill the holes as rusty wool makes a nasty mess.

The problem is that those who know the difference probably know better than to use it to start with. Over the years I've known several folks who someone told them to plug the holes under their sink, in an S&B, with steel wool so they bought SOS pads and stuffed them in there.
