Wait awhile, you haven't seen it go into "regen" when it's cold engine. It will blow white smoke out the tailpipe and you'll think it's on fire. Poor guy in the convertible next to me came up blowing his horn yelling "you're on fire". It was smoking so bad I couldn't even see him. Ford Customer Service says that's normal. My last Ford of any kind, period.

Mine never did that although I have heard of folks saying they did. maybe it is because we have never had this thing in real cold weather...

Dash Daq makes a great set of gages. You simply plug them in in the port under the stering wheel mount the screen deside what you wont to moniter. There are dozens if not a hundred or more things you cam moniter and dozens of screens, and best of all its easy. If any thing goes out of bounds it will warn you.

It does not have to be cold out. The guy in the convetible had his top down and was getting choked by all the smoke. I had just left the Ford dealer after they "fixed" it. Less than a mile away. It just did it again about two weeks ago. Wasn't as bad but the engine had started to warm up. Gauge was 1/4 way up. I don't care what Ford says, this is NOT normal.

Dennis this was a common problem in 08. It does NOT hurt your truck in any way. I thought it had been taken care of through computer up dates. It normally happens when its humid outside. But at any rate it not doing your truck any damage.

We have used Cetene booster since day one on our 08 6.4L. It was recommended by Ford and a long time diesel mechanic. We do not have frequent regens. We regened twice from Florida 1200 miles and we can not miss a regen as we have external gages that indicate the increase in EGT when in regen. We have regened twice since returning and have traveled over 2K miles. It does take about 20 mins for the regen.

which Cetane do you use, I have the 2008 6.4 also thanks

I have a 2010 6.4 and just left my Ford dealership getting all flashes up to dates since this truck has never been in shop and I so all oil and fuel filter maintenance. They actually recommended removing the filter and chipping the motor yet reminded my it would VOID the warranty. I only have 28000 mi thus will not be doing that..Guess I'll just tolerate the pathetic MPG's. Still love the truck though.

As my 6.4 is a 2008, my warranty has just expired. I'm would like to know more about the "removing exhaust filter / chipping if anyone has any additional information.

Yes I did it. It will NOT increase your mileage that much. I put a Spartan tuner on mine. It comes with the Dash Daq gages. They are the best gages on the market as far as I know. These gages will check any signal your engine is putting out. I check 10. They will check for fault codes and erase them. They will record every thing you are monitoring. Then you can display them on a spread sheet. You can get rid of the DPF and all of the related hardware. You can choose the HP you wont any where from zero gain to 350 extra rear wheel HP. I run the 210 HP chip which gives me about 610 fly wheel HP. From what I see your truck will be no worse off for having a tuner and I think better off. You will get rid of the fuel in your oil that the regen process almost certainly causes. When your truck goes into regen your EGT goes up by 300 to 400 degrees, that wont happen any more. Oh your mileage will increase a little. I'm not sure how much. Fuel mileage to me is what it is. What a Spartan tuner will do is give you a different truck, a much nicer truck. You wont even believe the difference. It's not just the extra power. And NO I do not work for Spartan, I'm just a very satisfied customer. If any of you have any questions feel free to call 540 380 2683 ask for Lynwood any time 8 am to 5 pm EDT.

I was introduced to Cetane at the NHRA drag races in Ennis, TX. There was a booth dedicated entirely to Ford diesels and the folks working it were seemingly very knowledgeable about diesel motors. I had just bought my 2010 with the 6.4 and was visiting this booth and complaining about my fuel economy and the frequency of the regen. The guys running the booth said it was imperative that we always run diesel fuel with a Cetane rating of 45 which by the way is not available in Oklahoma. I called Valero who supplies the diesel fuel in my area and was informed the Cetane rating was 41. Centane is easy to find and almost every auto place has it. I buy mine a Walmart and add one ounce per 3 gallons of diesel fuel thus its pretty cheap. A 16 dollar bottle treats 250 gallons. The guys running the booth said I would notice better performance and much less regens. I was not noticing poor performance thus the main thing I noticed was a little better MPG's and much fewer regens. On one trip to Yellowstone NP we drove 4600 miles without a regen. The DVD that came with our truck spent a good bit of time talking about the cetane requirements.

mlh, just my personal opinion, but I would not be recommending removing anything if your truck is under warranty. ford is pretty good at finding out that things have been altered.

also if anyone is interested, my son is a service adviser at a ford dealership in the truck shop and already this year has had two 6.4 liter diesels in with blown head gaskets and coked turbo's. Both engines were chipped. All paid out of pocket. One owner knew what happened and didn't even argue, but the second tried to get it covered, but the clues were there. so chip away if you want.

The cetane rating is NOT normally posted at the diesel pump. What bandit may be talking about is a cetane booster that is added to the fuel. There are many products that do the same thing. I use the product that can be purchased at Walmart called Diesel Kleen. I think that is what bandit is referring to. we have used that product from day one upon advise from our Ford Dealership. Follow the directions on the product and you will be OK.
valero is BTW garbage Diesel 41 cetene and your truck will run like crap.
Shell premium is 45 cetane for sure as is I am sure Sunoco premium diesel. If a diesel fuel is marked premium that means it is 45 cetane...

racerjoe I,m not trying to by mean but I really don't care about Ford's warranty. I would rather have the advantages of the tuner than the warranty. My truck is almost past 5 years anyway. If I break it I will fix it. If I bought a new Ford I would tune it. If I bought a Chevy I would not tune it.
