We had a nice visit with Phil and Sally Paxton in Dundee Fla today. They gave us a ride on their train. WOW!! That was fun!

Our neighbor has a model train with about a half mile at track a forty foot long tunnel a bridge as long as the tunnel. He says he built it for his grand children. Sure. I find out this is a big hobby among rail road enthusiast. They have meets visit with each other sounds just like Montana owners.

Besides working with the full size trains (volunteer) we also belong to the small scale (inch and a half or 1/8th scale) live steamers/trains club. Yes, these trains are a huge hobby, more that people realize since a lot of them are in private yards/properties. The one we belong to is www.willowcreekrr.org The absolute epitome of the small scale stuff is a place here in Oregon called Train Mountain. It is the largest small scale railroad in the world. www.trainmountain.org or www.friendstm.org Every three years they have a Triennial event which brings people from all over the world. Next one is in 2015. Worth the trip if you are in the area, or even some distance away. There are RV parks in the area as well. You'll see train sets that are worth over a half million dollars. Nobody said it was a cheap hobby, and it definitely is not. But, it's a lot of fun, and like Montana owners, there is a great camaraderie among the groups.

I had the opportunity to run one of these locomotives several years ago. The ability of these small locomotives to pull a train with several adults was simply amazing. I considered building one back in the late 70's until I determined that the cost to buy the parts and outfit a home machine shop exceeded the purchase price of my home. That doesn't take into account that to do it right you have to be a master machinist, a talent that I did not possess.

I know another guy who had one of these engines and a few cars. He said he gave it away for $40,000.
