Battery Electrical Help Needed
I have decided to install a second 12V battery to the rig (I understand that 6V are better, but my needs are a little different). What I am trying to accomplish is to have two separate 12V battery feeds to the rig. The batteries will be separated by a switch (similar setup to house and cranking battery on a boat) that will enable either battery or both to be selected. I want the two separate feeds so that if I drain one battery, I can switch to the other battery which will let me start the on-board generator and in turn re-charge the dead battery. While on shore power, both batteries will be selected which will allow for both batteries to be charged. If anyone has done this, your input will be appreciated. I am going to use a Perko switch and I think all I have to do is to attach the converter/charger feed to the common terminal on the switch and the battery positives to each side terminal (1 and 2). The common terminal is typically attached to the starter on the boat circuit and I am assuming this would work for the charger on the rv circuit. Comments???

I believe you want a Battery isolator, look at West Marine and see what you can find.

Ozz,
My understanding is that the switch functions as an isolator. It will allow the selection of battery 1, battery 2, both (all) or none. If you are referring to a diode type isolator (automatic), I am not sure I comprehend why it is needed. Am I missing something here? I appreciate the feedback nonetheless, it is educating me!!

I am foggy on it, but I think you can buy a device that will shout off the load if the battery gets to a certain low-medium charge, to allow starting a vehicle, automatically, a one, two, or none selector is good, but you need to charge them and not have them isolated from charging.
See what they have, I think maybe J.C. Whitney as well.

This is my setup...albeit I'm still 12vdc but you can sub in (2) in series 6vdc batteries for each 12v that I have in the circuit.
