King Pin Emergency Breakaway Switch

While backing the rig into the yard today, I caught the breakaway switch cable on my hitch frame and and broke the cable attachment plastic portion for the switch. I ordered the following replacement from Fastway http://www.fastwaytrailer.com/newsto...&products_id=4 so I should not snag the cable again.
I plan to just splice the switch wiring into the existing wires that lead from the present switch box into the kingpin electrical wiring box. This seems like a good course of action to fix the problem. Am I going about this correctly? Thanks, Tim

Tim,

I use a 18 inch piece of clear tubing to slide over the cable and that weight holds it down and out of the way so it cannot hang up.

That should do the job. I did the same with the main trailer 7 pin cable. It hung on my bed saver and ripped it out of the box under the pin. Sparks all over. I now have a spring connected under the belly and on the cable. The breakaway cable is also connected to the spring area.

Thanks all for the feedback. Since the Fastway cable is coiled, it shouldn't catch again. I'll just splice into the existing electrical cable about eight inches from the new box. That way the splices will be protected and under the kingpin itself. I sure didn't want to have to take out the electrical box in the pin itself and rewire there.
