I am changing mine over in the spring. All I need to do is fine a compadent shop to do the work. I just don’t want to hall it to Elkhart from Arizona.

Wayne: The Performance Trailer Brake company does a lot of these installs. I know at least 8 members here who have used them. They will be at the Western Region Spring Rally (check that thread for prices and contact links).

Safety Recall

I have decided to ditch the electric brakes this summer, but I just saw that there is a new safety recall on the 2019 Montana Legacy disc brakes for undersized mounting bolts. Does anyone know the manufacturer of the factory disc brakes kit so I don't buy something I'll regret? I had been thinking about a package from e-trailer.

Within a couple of months after buying our Montana in '15 I had Performance install disc brakes in my driveway. I never met the Boss just talked on phone and email. At that time it was Ronald Russell who was running this part of the country. Saw their ad on Trailer Life magazine. I think he may have retired now. Soo much better than drum brakes! Late last year I had a friend use them also and very happy. Central Texas area.

The problem was either Lippert (owns Dexter) or Keystone used too short caliper bracket bolts. There was no problem with the brakes or design. As long as you remove the existing bolts and replace them with a longer version (Grade 8 preferred), there is no problem with either Kodiak or the multi piston Lippert/Dexter.



Change those existing puny magnet brakes over to discs and you will never worry about whether you will stop in time again.

I second that. The difference is night and day. You WILL be amazed at the stopping power you have with the disc brakes.

I was looking at the video on e-trailer for the conversion. This looks pretty straight forward. The only part I didn't like was how they spliced the cable at the pin box and ran the new cable on the outside until they could get it into the front compartment. Any concern with that being exposed?

I installed mine myself and fished the wiring from the pin box to the compartment where all of the hookups are. I would be surprised that any reputable installer would leave the wiring exposed.

As others have said, I would never go back to drum brakes.

Running the wire from the pinbox to the front compartment is not a hard task. If having it done, make it clear how you want the wire ran.

Disc Brake Conversion

I was wondering where to mount the brake lines when converting my 3400RL to electric over disc brakes. Can anyone give me some suggestion?

These are photos of our install. The actuator is installed in the curb side propane compartment, and the line is run down to the outside of the frame and along it to the end of the drop frame, then up along the frame to above the axles. I went to a hardware store while the installer was working and purchased a 1 1/2" angle to install across the frame to support the brake line to the road side brakes. He otherwise would have just snaked it above the coroplast, but this is a better way than that. And for those doing this, Bill, the installer, was able to remake some connections in the junction box at the pin box and then capture the wire in the harness in the front compartment for the control wire for the brakes from the tow vehicle so he didn't have to snake an additional wire back to the actuator, which made for a very clean install.

Thank you so very much. That has got me to rethinking the matter.
I have been scratching my head all day trying to figure the best way to do the routing. I have began to mount it inside the front compartment next to the batteries, but I have having a time trying to figure how to bend the hard metal brake tubing (that is 30 feet long) to three or four different angles on one end . Your way looks a lot simpler.
My actuator is a Hyrastar and didn't come with any instructions. I've watched several YouTube videos but they don't pertain to my 2011 Montana.

The brake line bender tool that the installer used definitely made the job much easier. He also had a plier that was used to straighten the line, but he only used it once. They have the benders on Amazon fairly inexpensive that will keep the lines from being kinked while installing.

hey, regardless of what braking system you have springs DO break and come apart.


If you want more safety get disc brakes.

The kit I used from stop your trailer.com uses a short rubber line coming out of the actuator before it attaches to the hard line. This makes it much easier to transition from the storage compartment to the frame rail. Wether you use a hard line or a rubber line you need to be sure to use a grommet where you go through the wall. Another consideration is ease of access when adding brake fluid. My location makes that easy and there is still enough (just barely) room to remove the battery cover. Just for reference the white semicircle you see at the top f the photo is the bottom of the propane tank.
Again, time spent planning the routing will pay dividends in the end!

12 volt electrical, and insulated wiring, not sure the issue. I have a feeling thats the accepted method, thats where mine is at the curb side propane compartment.
Its also a factory installation. I would think if there was any concern at all, they wouldn't be putting them in there.

On edit, the opposite side compartment on mine is the 12 volt cutoff switch, pretty sure there is no issues with 12 volt wiring being in those compartments .

I fished my brake wire right through the existing loom from the pin box to the front compartment. Just lucked out maybe but it's worth a try!
