If you use a product like "Diesel Kleen" it will add 6 to 10 cents per gallon to the cost of fuel to try and get those cetane numbers up pending amount of additive added. We use this product regularly and can't really say it works wonders (may be running a bit OT here from OP). We average 10.7 calculated with a 6.4 over all conditions at 62 to 67 mph pulling our 3400RL (now it is tunned with DPF delete with 32,000 miles).
Would be so nice to just fuel up and go; no urea, no other additives; where are we going in this Environmentally friendly society by simply burning 1 1/2 times the fuel to meet EPA standards??? I am having a difficult time to comprehend this process.
Those new diesels should get 12 to 15 towing and 20 to 25 empty; then, just calculate the reduction in fuel cost which will reduce demand and increase supply with a resultant of reduced prices per gallon at the pump!! LOL.

Well I just returned from a 460 mile business trip. It was the truck myself & my wife. We drove some on 2 lane highway, some on 4 lane highway and a small amount of interstate. I spent a lot of time driving 70 and 75 m.p.h. also a lot of the trip was in pretty hilly country. I averaged 20.2 for the trip. My 2006 King Ranch wouldn't have done nearly that well at those speeds.

Hey Dave - what is your axle ratio please?
Running empty recently, just wife and kids, on some open roads at 60mph we did get over 20mpg. I was very happy with that!
THanks
Chris

My axle ratio is 3.55 If I drive and keep my top speed at 60 to 65, I expect I could probably get close to 22 m.p.g

Thanks - same ratio as mine then.
Couple more questions (sorry!) - how many miles do you have on your truck and are you in part of the country where you will be running a winter blend of diesel?
We run it here - I don't know much about this in other areas, assume some parts of the country remain warm enough through winter that they don't need it?

The truck has right at 4,000 miles on it. I expect mileage to improve as engine gets broken in. I'm in Tennessee, close to the southern border so I doubt we're running winter blend fuel.

We just returned from Texas 1600 miles one way towing the Big Sky. I got 11.9 on the way down and 10.9 coming home. On the way home I got 11.7 the first two days and then we hit the rain and wind, watched it drop to 10.9 over the next 3 days, I have the 3.31 locking diff. Just before arriving at home the change oil warning came on, about 7200 miles. I took it up to the dealer for an oil change and the service manager asked me if had been using a cetane booster, he was not happy when I told him no. In no uncertain terms he told me to start using it, cetane ratings at the pump average 38 and Ford recommends 45. He said it will improve performance and mileage, performance is awesome now but a little better mileage would be great. This 6.7 gets about 4mpg better than my previous 6.4., and the power difference cannot be compaired. It is a awesome truck.
