I'm not an expert on handhelds at all. I just finished some research and about 10 minutes ago ordered (it's all YOUR fault, Charlie@ the unit that best fits my needs. I ordered a Garmin eTrex Vista Cx for $232.99 (no tax except in Ohio. Free shipping) from www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com . I researched this company and they are very highly rated by consumers but I have, until now, no firsthand experience with them. The gps can be seen at www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com/catalog/182/6256/ .

I have had an invehicle gps for awhile and have been very pleased with both the product quality and the customer support from Garmin. I'm sure there are other good units out there, too.

Good luck.

If you go to this site and poke around you may get some ideas. I have a magellan and it works for me but it is an older model and I can't compare to all the older models.
My apologies go out to Steve for making him spend his money.

You can't go wrong with any of Garmin eTrex series of GPS systems. I have used a Garmin eTrex Legend for several years in the field (with the National Forest Service and National Parks Service). I do not do geocaching but from what I have seen it would work great. I also use the Garmin Map Source program to download location and waypoint information from it to the computer and upload from the computer to the Garmin.

Garmin and Magellan both make suitable hand held GPS's. Mine is a Magellan Explorist 210. A fairly low end model in the Magellan line. You really need to decide what features you need and then shop around. Color screens are nice, but they cost, and won't help you find the cache. You do need a display screen that will show the cache location and your current location with the distance and direction you are from the cache. You need to be able to connect to a computer to download cache locations. You probably will also want a power adapter to let you run the GPS from a vehicle power supply. I bought mine on e-bay. Look at Garmin and Magellan web sites, pick out some likely models and then shop around.

If you have any questions about how a specific Garmin model works, if you go to the garmin website, click on Support/Manuals, then choose the appropriate items in the three dropdown boxes, it will list the owners manual and, on some, the quick reference guide. You can download them and look through them to understand the features. I don't know if Magellan has a similar setup.

For handheld gps, select "outdoor" in the first dropdown box. For an automotive gps, select "mobile electronics."
