The shower on my 06 2955RL just started to leak a few drops into the basement. This is a very common problem and I had been expecting it.
The problem as many know is the use of plumbers putty under the drain basket. This was the material used over 30 years ago but 100% silicone is much better and I used silicone when I plumbed my house 29 years ago. Still no leaks and the tub drains are over my unfinished workshop downstairs so I would notice a leak. Silicone has adhesion and flexibility. Plumbers putty has no real adhesion and when you look at this pic, it is amazing that only a few drops leaked into the storage area. An outdated material used poorly. My unit is very well made and this is a very minor problem and so easy to fix. I paid 4 bucks for a tube of GE Silicone II that is designed for bathroom fixtures. It is mildew resistant and one caulking gun tube would probably seal over a dozen shower drains but plumbers putty is cheaper yet I guess.
The black ring is the nut that is screwed on down below to clamp the shower drain. Just clean up the basket and shower drain hole, lay a bead of silicone around the hole and snug up the nut. Wipe away the excess that will squeese up around the drain. Allow it to dry over night before attaching the trap and completing the plumbing. Leaks are gone for good.
