Check Propane Hoses

Today, when removing propane tank to have it filled I notice that the hose from the regulator to the pipe servicing the trailer had slid down between the tank and the metal wall. An area approx 1/2" x 2" had worn off down to the 3rd layer of the hose. Wasn't leaking yet but may have been close. Replaced hose and fastened it so that this couldn't happen again.

Inspecting and preventative maintenance stops lots of potentially bigger problems. Good catch.

We are big on preventative maintenance as we worked in a field were preventative maintenance was a big part of the job.

I had a failure in one of my pigtails a couple years ago, little gas would pass through. I guess the check valve had failed, because nothing I could do would fix it. But, when replacing it, I discovered the hose was extremely stiff, so replacement just for that was a good idea. Later on, I was talking to a propane tech, filling a large tank at the FIL's house, and told him about the hose. He said some of these hoses are made with a plastic type hose material instead of a rubber material, and they get hard over time, and can break instead of flexing like they should. I did replace the other side pigtail, but if the hose to the tank is stiff, it might be a good idea to replace it before it breaks, even if it is still functioning OK.
