Searching for next RV

Searching for new RV presently leaning to a new Montana High Country 384BR. Have a 2018 F250 Super Duty Crew Cab Short Box 4x4 Platinum with Heavy trailer suspension. Joined the site for research and feedback.

Welcome to the forum! Its a great place to learn and share.

As you read the forum you will likely see owner satisfaction with the High Country is lower than the Montana and there is not a lot of difference in price.

There is a difference in weight. I have a HC and haven’t had any trouble with it. Mine is a 2011 model. The new ones have a lot of problems with the gear boxes leaking dumping oil on the roof of the slide. Keystone would rather patch the problem than fix it. You might do as I did and find a like new used unit and save yourself a lot of trouble not to mention money.

We bought our HC last May and have had it on the road for approximately 7 1/2 months. We are currently on a six month tour out west. We are lucky in that we have had few problems and some of those have been user errors. If you like the HC you have seen I would just go for it. Lots of negative vibes about the new Montanas but the people who don't have problems don't make as many comments on the forum. We have had to deal with customer service twice and both times they were very helpful and solved our issues without a big fuss. We also have a Ford F-250 and have zero towing problems.

I would do the math and accurately determine the max legal tongue weight that truck can handle. Then look for trailers that fit that limitation. Unless that is no concern to you then buy what makes the wife happy.

Picked up a new 17 345rl this spring and love it. I’ve had a few minor problems but, overall it’s been a great camper.

Montana’s and HCs use some different components, primarily in the slides, but main issues on all the Keystone products is poor workmanship. Read the forums. Montana’s have plenty of problems too.

Welcome, Ill just add my 2 cents, we fell in love with the floor plan & bought a 381th. Had a bad slide out leak, ending up fixing it myself. Leaky gearboxes seem to be a big problem, spoke to BAL customer service, no new boxes coming. She is sending me the drip pans so I dont have to go back to the dealer. Two of the four roofs I caught in time, the other two I will keep an eye on. Bottom line is they all have issues, if they can be repaired easily you deal with it. We love the time we spend camping & this coach makes us feel at home so Ill put up with some repairs.

I have a 2014 HC 343 RL. The only issues I have had is Max air circuit board went bad. Recent trip had the High Country sign and molding trim come crashing down. One of the pendant lights that hangs down had a bolt shear off and was hanging by the wires. One bad tire. I can fix the trim and the hanging lights. Replaced the circuit board and put new tires on. Have done various upgrades by choice. I figure with the roads and the way things bounce around
stuff will happen. Good luck and I have learned a lot from folks on this forum. Everyone has an opinion and many have many. Makes for great entertainment.

Questions

We are looking at getting a Montana 3891fb...
Questions:
Do you still need the slide out braces when traveling?
What seem to be the most common issues?
Are the generators and sar panels any good?
Are the slide out awnings good or bad?
Would the tires need upgraded to a heavier one?

I have never used (in 12 years) and rarely see anyone with slide out braces - if you are talking about bracing the outer end of the slide when camped.
If the tires are Salins, then you are good there.
Can't address other issues

Looking for High Country

One of those responding to your post about a High Country suggested looking into used units. I heartily agree! A good one will cost so much less and the owner has probably dealt with all the minor and some times major issues that accompany a new rig. We have seen some excellent ones for private sale without having to spend much more time than going through all the new units that interest you as well as dealing with the sales people. We have been full timing for 15 years and would expect most people like us would agree with checking on private sales. We presently have a 2011 Montana Hickory at over 36' and 4 slides. We pull it with a 3/4 ton Chev diesel 4X4 and have done so over the Rockies several times without incident and have put 220,000 miles on it without working on the engine.

We have had slides with and without awnings. "With" presented flapping in the wind though we understand some can be tighter than others. We opt for 14-ply tires and have had no problems whatsoever for 6 years and will probably replace due only to age.

I have yet to meet (though I am sure such exist) an RV owner who has not had problems with his/her unit. I, once again, suggest looking into a well-maintained (check service/repair documents) used rig.

Our experience in having purchased 4 different rigs from 3 different dealers is: "Thank you for purchasing our unit" aaaannnnnnddddd "we hope to never see you again." Even very successful dealers often have long waits for servicing and those not successful - best to avoid them, yes?
