Why you should have a filter for the R.V furnace
I was wiring up controls today and had to get under the stairs.
If I did not have the filter, all the dust, dirt, animal hair would be wrapped around the curved fan blades.

My heater return is under the refrigerator, but its all open from under the refrigerator around to the steps too.
Ozz, What kind of filter do you recommend?

I just took a pleated hardware store filter and cut it to fit.
The filter will not cause any problems with restriction if all furnace fans blow as hard as mine does, and I think they are all about the same. BUT I have not seen all different types.

JIm,
I have often considered that option. I think you have convinced me.
Question: I have been told that if you buy those "White" replacement filter for the AC that you should increase the intake air flow where the filter goes. The reason stated was that the more dense filters will hinder the air return. Any thoughts on this? And what about that filter for the furnace? Just the standard fiber glass okay?

You bet, Jay
Hi Wayne,
The engineers design those filters to not restrict airflow- overall. Now it does depend on the filter, but an inexpensive hardware store pleated filter will do fine, the upper end 3-M pleats do restrict airflow, and it depends on the design, blower package of the furnace and so on. I like the pleats far better than the fiberglass, but they will be OK.

OK, I measured the Monty for a new Television so go back and measure for air filters. Ozz--keep 'em coming! First I have to get the Texas state inspection, wheel bearings packed and wet-bolts greased. Plenty of time before diesel hits $5 a gallon--better get going!

Ohhh, Tim you just reminded me, I have to order a Wet-bolt kit! Thanks, my list keeps growing as well.
It is sleeting here, so I'm in the basement shop making the living room TV mounting.
I know, the rising gas prices scare me, back on Spam and beans for me...

Remember Clark Griswald's cousin Eddy? Who needs hamburger, hamburger helper is just fine...
Just cut a filter down in size, the Pleats will stay in place, you can tape the cut end with duct tape.

Thanks, I'm going to do that if I can't find the proper size.
We actually lived that way back in 1961 when I was over paid by the USMC. We went about 5 months of "No Pay Due." We lived on that food list I posted, plus other "staple" items. My Platoon Sgt one day tole me to pull my car up alongside the work space. I did, and he put some radios in the trunk and told me to take them somewhere. Then he told me to wait a minute, I needed gas for the trip, and had fellow Marines pour a 5 gallon can of gas into the tank. I never questioned his action(s). If it had not been for the Navy Relief Society, and both Mom and Dad's, I don't know how we would have survived. We would come up with enough money to buy heating oil that would last 3 weeks out of 4, some times not as long depending on the Lord's weather, but we made it.
I enjoy hearing some of the present day hardship stories. Sometimes I get to tell mine.

Wayne the hardships and 'flush' times alike, make us the people we are today.
Those of us who endured those hardships just may appreciate what we have, and endure any present day sacrifices a little easier.
Those past hard times also prompt us to do for others without much thought.
