transfer switch
for those of you who have the genb prep and got a letter telling you to have the tranfer switch checked, do so. However we had our switch checked and this is what happened yesterday. I hope this works.

Was the recall only on the Iota automatic transfer switches or does anyone know. Our rig does not have an Iota, however, I did tighten all the lugs when I installed the EMS system in the new rig. I will have the dealer doublecheck to see if the new transfer switch is in the recall.

In my opinion, the whole problem is factory hunman error, just because they did not tighten the set-screw. I bet the transfer switch itelf is fine.
hunman? oh well..

Was this transfer switch installed by the factory?
Where is the switch located in your trailer? I have a factory installed generator and will be looking for the transfer switch.
Thanks.

On our previous 3400, the transfer switch was located in the battery compartment. I don't know if the newer models are the same.

Ours was factory installed. It is located behind the panel in the basement where the TV mount and duplex plug is, it also is behind the curcuit breaker box

We smelled something hot, like wiring. We opened up the panel where the switch is to see if we could see anything and Jan saw smoke

I have the IOTA in mine and have never wanted a gen. I removed the box that was there for the gen to make room for storage I will look at it. I need to see if it can be removed. sounds like a good place for a surge protector.

Bobby,
If you can find an old post of mine, I hardwired a Progressive EMS to the output on the Iota auto-transfer switch. It was about a half-hour installation and I would think if you just want to hard-wire a surge guard type device it would be just as easy. On the inside of the Iota cover, there is a detailed wiring diagram that makes the job easy. you don't have to remove the auto-transfer switch for the installation but as you stated it would make the installation of a protective device much easier since you won't have to cut wires (they are already there on the input and output legs of the device).

Bobby,
Saved you the trouble, I have the pics on Photobucket at:
EMS Install - 3400RL with Iota
There are lots of experts on the forum, I had to follow a lot of their advice, don't be afraid to ask if and when you decide to do something.

Great Bingo thanks I will look at mine tomorrow after a va appointment. Still may need some help my IOTA is different than that. I have got to sat down in front of it and see how to go. I would also like to relocate my plug to the front like that it seems like a much better place.

Actually, the way I did it was to add an additional receptacle. The auto-transfer switch enabled the addition of a front plug without removing the rear one. The switch has two inputs (usually one is for a generator but it can be hi-jacked and used for an additional receptacle) and one output. All I had to do was buy about four foot of wire, and the receptacle. The hardest part was drilling the hole!!!!
