Goodrich Tires

Just talked to a Goodrich company rep about putting thier tires on the Monty. He suggests not to,because they do not make an ST tire. He said the LT tires will not stop the rig from swaying, and that is what the ST tires are designed to do. I know there has been lots of tire discussions on this board. I am wondering if anyone with Goodrich tires on thier rig has noticed any swaying of thier Montys ?

I have 4 BFG Commercial AT's on mine and they are GREAT. No extra sway noticed at all. In fact I don't notice much sway at all. Not buffited by winds much. I've got around 10,000 miles on them. Been down back dirt roads to interstates with them. I had Goodyear Marathons ST be fore them.
Hope this helps.

This is a new one on me. I've never experienced anything like "sway" with any of our RVs, tag-alongs or 5th wheels. I'd be interested in a definition of "sway."

Possibly a "sway" bar on a tag along would prevent it. Sounds like the weight of the Montys would be enough to keep it from happening.

I have the Commercial TA's on mine. 14,000 miles and no problems with tires or sway. Love them as they handle great and are wearing very well. Jim

I put BFG Commercial TA's on my Monty last September. I love them, no swaying, and they appear to run a little be cooler than the Marathons did, but haven't hit summer with them yet.

BF Goodrich for us. Love the tires. I haven't noticed any sway at all and I don't have to worry about them exploding.

In all the years I've been in the tire business, that is the first time I have ever heard ST tires are designed to stop sway and LT tires aren't. My experience has been the opposite, the LT has a stiffer sidewall and sways less. He's right about one thing though, Michelin (parent company of BFGoodrich) does not make an ST rated tire, nor do they recommend the use of their LT rated tires on trailers. Does this mean you can't use an LT tire on a trailer? No, IMHO they just aren't going to recommend it because they don't want to have to stand behind their tires when used on trailers.

Before you put tires on your Montana that a dealer has specifically stated should not be put on it, you might want to do some more research...after all, that guy is in business to make money and if he was turning down your bucks, there might be more to the story. Just a thought....

I'm in business to make money too, the tire business to be more specific, and I have no qualms about selling and installing LT rated tires to replace ST rated tires as long as they will safely carry the load. The person Dave and Pat was referring to is not a tire dealer but a BFG company representative that, IMHO, is not going to say anything that has even the slightest chance of coming back to bite his company in the butt.

The only cautionary statement I have to make is, be absolutely certain the tires will safely handle the weight when fully loaded.

That sound you hear is a tire dealer somewhere drooling ...
On edit: No offense intended to Lonnie. I value his opinion.

We also are in the process of buying new tires. We went to 4 different dealers and got 4 different opinions of what will and will not work. It all depends on who you talk to. We decided to go with the LT tires because they will fit our rims and everyone has had sucess. The G tires we had to buy new rims or we would have went that route. We bought the GF's like everyone else has. They are not on yet but bought so can not give an opinion of how they hold up. Got to be better than the china tires.

The best load range E tires cost be darned? IMHO, the following list in order of best first.

LT235/85R16 LRE

1. Michelin XPS Rib - All steel construction. Approx. $298.00 each.
2. Bridgestone Duravis R250 Commercial - All steel construction. Approx. $254.00 each.
3. Bridgestone Duravis R500 Commercial - Steel tread belts / polyester sidewalls. Approx. $222.00 each.
4. Firestone Transforce H/T - Steel tread belts / polyester sidewalls. Approx. $156.00 each.
5. BF Goodrich Commercial T/A - Steel tread belts / polyester sidewalls. Approx. $174.00 each.

ST235/80R16 LRE

1. Maxxis M8008 - Steel tread belts / polyester sidewalls. Approx. $165.00 each. After trying many brands of ST rated tires, this is the only one I will recommend or sell. There may be a better brand somewhere, but I haven't found it.

On Edit -

Some of us do, some of us don't. It all depends on the weight of the trailer at the axles when fully loaded and hooked to the tow vehicle, how the trailer is towed, and where the trailer is towed. I wish there was a yes or no answer for your question, but there are just too many factors involved to do that.

Lonnie I really don't mean to be a pest But what do you mean by, how and where a camper is towed?
