Well I have the Nuvi 680. Now what unit should I look at to take on the trail and/or quad with me?

At full charge, you have 3 hours on the Nuvi. That can be stretched by turning the unit off when not in use.

There you go...mark your vehicle and do what you want to do. When your done you can easily find your way back.
This works really well at the big parks in Florida - you can easily find your way back to your vehicle...so nice.

If you use the Quad you can charge the unit off the Quad's 12 volt system.
Pack an extra set of batteries.
Good luck.

I just bought a Garmin E-Trex Vista HCx and went on my first geocache trip today. Nice little handheld, Battery operated so you can carry spares. Probably good idea to never go out without extra batteries. We will probably use a fanny pack for carrying it and extra batts and instruction booklets. Unit has a lot of features and will require some time to become proficient using it.........

I have a Garmin E-Trex Legend. It will run continuously on two of the Duracell Ultra Digital AA batteries for 15-16 hours, or about 10-11 hours on rechargeables.

Which ever handheld you get make sure it will automatically mark your trail as you go along then you will know exactly where to turn on the way back.

I also have the Garmin E Trex Legend. Good, as it works on batteries, for hand held and can get a power cords for traveling in the truck. It also will give you travel time and miles travel and speed. I have had it for a while. Used it backpacking, have a mount for the bicycle and the truck. You can also buy the program to put on lap top or desktop computer anad you can download info into the E Trex. I pretty sure that you now get the wire that connects the gps to the computer and you can use it as the screen in your truck as you travel, if you have room in the cab. Works good good for the geocaching

I have the Garmin 60C. It had been my primary unit for car and trail, but I also have a 680 Nuvi coming for Christmas. If you plan on doing wilderness areas, backpacking into the back country, the e-trex units are much lighter. I would not use the Nuvi as it is not waterproof. Not all E-trex units accept mapping software. You can get topographic maps for some of the e-trex units and also the units like the 60c. Make a list of options that are important to you - waterproof, light weight, accepts maps, perhaps compass and barometer, and then go to the garmin site and compare. If you go to garmin.com and click on "On the Trail", it will list all units for that type of activity. Hope this helps.
