Pin weight of 3400

I'm curious of the pin weight of the 3400 that everyone is buying. I have a 2001 2880 that I'll be pulling with a 2007 3500 SRW and it has a pin weight of 2160#, but I also have a Onan gen up front. I have an additional 480# to spare with the 9900#GVW as opposed to the 2500 with 9200# GVW.

My 2004 3400RL came in with a pin weight of 1,800 lbs. Loaded up with all my stuff, I am running with a pin weight around 2,300 lbs. The new 07 3400RL's have a heavier pin weight right out of the factory so my numbers probably won't be of much help to you.

My brochure shows our 2007 model at 2000lbs, but by the time we put all our "junk" up there it will be closer to 2600. Remember that it's not just the stuff upstairs that adds weight, but a portion of what you also put in the basement (which is huge by the way, and very tempting to load up with "toys"). Ha! Ha!

Let common sense prevail. Know your guidelines.

My 2005 - 3400 loaded with full tanks, supplies, gear and clothes for a 3 month stay weighed in at a pin weight of 2,925#. My unit was weighed at the "Rally" in Daytona last year by the RVSEF (Recreational Vehicle Safety Education Foundation.)

Bigred715, pinweight on our 2007 3400RL is 2860 but we are very heavily loaded.

Mine is 2340 but only loaded for a weekend of camping. So I am probably lighter than a full timer.

BigRed,

I just took my 07 3400 to the scales, and got a pin weight of 3,120. I have not loaded anything yet, and no water.

For options we have the gelcoat and 2nd AC, king bed, and fifth airborne air pin box, that contribute to the pin weight. I suspect once properly loaded it wont change much based on the rear water tank and stuff for the kitchen. Might even go down a little.

3,120 ? Wow!

I will definitely weigh mine as well. 1,100lbs air conditioner? I'm starting not to trust any documentation that keystone gives out, but finding it rather important to do you own study - pertaining to your own RV unit.

Brad are you sure your pickup bed wasn't full of snow?

Brad--3,120#??????? With no cargo????

Did they move the axles rearward when they put in those 7,000# axles? If not, does anyone know what could possibly cause that big a jump in pin weight?

3100 pounds on the pin before you load up the trailer is no light weight Fiver. It sounds like the new 07 Montana 3400 has placed a larger demand on the tow vehicle's GVWR. I guess there is no free lunch.

I will say the majority of people will add considerable weight to their Montana's pin weight when they load them up for the simple reason that all the storage is up front.

My fully loaded pin weight of 2600 pounds puts my truck GVWR at 11080, just under my 11200 rating.
There may be people that can pull an 07 3400 with a SRW Ford F350 but they would have to pack much lighter than I do, not to overload the truck. I guess if I move up to a 3400 some day and I want to keep driving a Ford, I will be shopping for a new Dually .

Brad, could that possibly have been a typo? I would have expected maybe 2,130 or 2,310 when empty.

Mine's an 07 and is very heavily loaded. Including 1/2 tank of freshwater the pinweight is 2,860. We do not have the new axles, however.

Steve,

I don't think it could be a typo, as it's computer generated. It certainly could have been operator error between me and the scale operator

I had the rear axles on scale 3 (8,640), the landing gear on Scale 2 (3,120), and the rear axle of the truck was sitting on scale 1 (3,640).

Might have to try it again at another scale.

Brad, was the Monty disconnected from your TV? If so, is the weight on the landing gear the same as the weight on the pin? My physics is a bit rusty but I do not think they are equivalent.

Just curious.

Bill,

Yes, it was disconnected from the truck. You could be right. The landing gear may not be an accurate pin weight. I'm just not that familiar with the process. The landing gear may set too far back and might be picking up extra weight normally associated with the axles???

Brad you need to weigh hooked up then unhook and weigh the truck. My 3400 empty with no water in the tanks was 2861 on the pin and 10420 on the 2 axels. I also have the generator that adds weight.

3120!! As screwed up as Keystone's weights are, I can't imagine they would be that far off...empty.

CAT - I think I did the weigh wrong, as I weighed it using the landing gear. Mudchief's weight (not too far off) is probably more accurate (with generator).

I've never been mistaken for a physics guru, but it seems to me there is a certain amount of weight forward of the axles...why would that weight be any different if weighed on the pin or landing gear?
