slides

Has anyone had problems with their slides. We have a Mountaineer 298rls. When putting the the living room slide it made a loud clunk and seemed to go out frather than it should have. We went outside to look at it and fluid was leaking out of the cylinder. Of course the slide would not go in. We had to hire some-one to take off the cylinder and crank the slide in by hand. Of course we could not put the slide out any more, and we were in New Mexico. Well we are now home and need to get the slide fixed. Just asking if this something that happens often? Thanks Ann and Ron from Wisconsin

We had a 2002 298rls for four years without any (major) problems. Any chance the slide was overextended? The loud noise may have been a weld breaking on the metal plate that the hydraulic cylinder pushes on, in order to extend the slide. That happened to my Aunt & Uncle's RV unit (a Keystone Hornet). We re-welded it and was careful not to continue to push on the "extend" button once in place. What year is your unit?

Hi Ann and Ron, No, that does not sound common. Sounds like you pulled the belly pan down and found fluid leaking from one of the pistons? It was a metallic clunk? Sounds like you ran it for too long, the pump will begin to labor (noise pitch change) when it encounters the end stop which is when you should stop pushing the out button. If metallic clunk then you snapped the end stop which could have also blown the seal in the piston, hence the fluid leaking. I would expect these can be pulled out, disassembled, new seals installed and reassembled. Then the metal end stop should be repaired or replaced not sure what your model looks like.
Good luck,
Chuck
