Need MPG for 3400RL and F-350 approx

Hi Group, My wife and I were going to buy the F-350 first then the 5th Wheel, but the perfect RV materialized and we grabbed her. (2005 Montana 3400RL) She's a beaut.

We are now looking into a 2009-2011 Ford F-350 (not dually) Diesel with approx 60,000 miles on it.

Our question: Does anyone else have a similar configuration and can give us a real world approximate MPG? We are planning our travel for this summer and want to put a good MPG number into the Good Sam trip planner so we can budget ahead. The previous owners had a Chevy 2500 which probably has better fuel economy.

Thank you for your help.

We pulled a 3400 with a chevy 2500 diesel for 7 years....MPG averaged 10....but we are not heavy footer, drive around 58, don't punch it to pass unless necessary and ran with a rig fairly light. This MPG was mostly in the western 1/3 US states so lots of hills and climbs over the cont divide. Have fun with the new to you rig.

We have a 2009 3400RL running close to max GVWR (15,800 lbs) towed with a 2009 Ford F-350 dually and get ~10mpg.

Fords and heavier fivers ... 10 - 11 mpg is a good figure to work with. Mountains and trying to run with car traffic will make it vary to the low side.

'11 F-350 6.7D 3.55 rear end, 2014 3900FB, got it last August and we are weekenders, so only pulled it three times before it went into storage but got 12.3mpg.

Before you buy the truck, check the weight ratings to make sure it's high enough for that trailer. I'm pretty sure the F-350 SRW is, but do NOT take a salesman's word for it, demand to see it in writing!

We get about 11.5 MPG with ours. Try to get a 2011 or newer with the new engine, you won't be sorry.

I find it really depends on wind direction, head winds eat into MPG. Done the mountains, prairies etc but winds had most affect.

12 and up to 12.5 on level roads, no wind @ 55-60.
10 to 11.5 on hilly WV stuff (most we've got for mountains around here!), same speed.
And this with DRW.

Be aware of what each responder has as a truck when considering their mileage. Ford 6.0L (2004-2007) and 6.7L (2011-current) engines get better mileage than the Ford 6.4L (2008-2010). The 6.4L was the first Ford motor with the DPF smog requirements. The mileage on these engines suffered. I was lucky to get 10 MPG. It usually was 9.0 to 9.5. Of course it depends on road conditions and wind (actual RV weight doesn't make much difference).

I have owned and towed with 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Ford diesels. The 6.7L is heads and shoulders above the rest of them.

How fast are you going to be driving 55 is a lot different than 75 like I drive. Where on flat road in the mountains. I don't think anybody can tell you.

Way to many variables for any kind of accurate answer. Our 06 3400 and now our 13 3402 Big sky will average 10 to 11MPg on any given trip. That is at 62/65 MPH. We have got 8mpg and we have got 12mpg.But at the end of a 10 hour drive I can expect around 10mpg. We have pulled the campers @ 70K miles.

Check the payload capacity on the truck and the Pin weight on the 5th wheel I would estimate the pin weight will be about 3K or so.It could be more.

On our return from FL last week we had three days of wind and barely broke 10 mpg. The fourth day with no wind we were at 11.5. We travel at 62-64 mph. The truck has 355 gears and 20" tires.

I always budget based on 10mpg. There's always a cushion that way.

Since you are looking at 2009-2011 I would recommend you push for a 6.7 rather than the 6.4 engine. With my setup, I usually get an average of 12-13 miles towing on flat terrain.

On our recent trip from WI to TX, we registered 11.2 on the dashboard readout. We try to keep the speed about 60-65 mph. This was a 1385 mile pull.

Thank you to all the great repliers here. Kathy Marker (Navigator) was right about this being the best community on the web. I feel safe in using the 10mpg as an average when calculating, though we may do better which is great. It sounds like the 2011-present Ford F-350 is what we “want” to get. Now, we will see what our budget will allow. ~Brett+Cheri
