Stocking your monty with non-China food
ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!
With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read labels at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products.
Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located. It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin.
How to read Bar Codes ....
interesting!
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM CHINA!!
This may be useful to know when grocery shopping,if it's a concern to you.
The whole world is afraid of China-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan .
This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE
ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA", so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode -remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 .... then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 ... FRANCE
40 - 44 ... GERMANY
47 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK
BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning
of the number.
We need every boost we can get!

Thanks for the info. I asked my wife about this and she already knew. Guess that's why she is in charge of the food.

Snopes says there is a mixture of truth and falsehood here. You may or may not be able to tell where a product originates. Snopes says "always look for the made in______label". I would play the odds and always shop a local grocery or even a chain. We don't do Walmart. Walmart is probably China's biggest customer. IMHO your odds of getting bad food goes up at Walmart.

I just went to the pantry and looked at some of the cand food and I could not find one item with the first three numbers starting with 690 - 696 even I'm going to look for some more tomorrow.

Looked at a lot of food products and they all started with 0. Had some Olive Oil and the bottle said right
on it imported from Italy and it started with 0.

So it would seem we are back to square one...in a related matter, our vet recommended a particular brand of dog food for our attack cocker...turned out she did not want anything to do with it...further turns out it is "Made in China." Or so the label said. Who knows?????

Just wondering if "snopes" say anything about Walmart being one of China's biggest customers, or the odds going up for getting bad food from Walmart????? Seems like the biggest food recalls lately came from U.S egg farms. Jim

That's true, the biggest recalls lately came from U.S. egg farms but I have to wonder who is looking at the quality of the food coming from China? The same people that let lead get into everything?

from another site:
Summary of the eRumor:
A forwarded email that shows how to determine whether a product is from China from by looking at the the Universal Product Code label.
The Truth:
Neither first three digits on the barcode nor any part of the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) has anything to do with country of origin,
The "Universal Product Code" (UPC) and barcode system is the means of marking products that is recognized all over the world. Depending on how old a product is, the numbers on a barcode can vary from 6 or more numbers. The most common UPC code in the US was the twelve number Type A UPC code or UCC-12.
The UPC Code begins with a single digit which defines the number system being used.

I thought I'd seen all the conspiracy theories in the world till I started reading and doing a little research on this! Wow! Don't you know the lawyers love WM! WalMart alone must account for half the $$$$$ in the world because of all the law suits!
If you haven't noticed over the last 50 years or so there is a "new" way of doing business. There are not a lot of products that are NOT multi national in one way or another. Many of the so called US Corps are actually part of or totally involved with some other country or countries.
And you do remember who it was that got the China thing started don't you? He opened the US and the rest of the world to the cheap labor of that country.
Good luck,
HamRad

"The first two or three digits of an EAN-13 barcode identify the country in which the manufacturer's identification code was assigned. They do not necessarily indicate the country in which the goods were manufactured" Look it up.
Another wives tale that has been around for awhile.

I bet if we deliberately choose to eat "Chinese food", we are probably safe, it is probably either "Made in Japan" or "Made in Mexico"?????

Gee Bingo you think there are any Chinese Restaurants that folks would actually eat in after reading all the posts above. If the food is dangerous imagine how dangerous the people that own and manage these restaurants must be! Why just tonight my wife and I gambled and ate another Chinese dinner! If you don't hear from us soon you'll at least know why!

Having operated a restaurant (Moose lodge) in Ohio it would be difficult to get bad food or unsanitary conditions past the health department and their inspectors.
