Spare tire cable assembly
Hubby had to lower our spare tire this past Friday. Hubby tried to raise the flat tire back under the Monty. When he did he got the tire almost flush with the underbelly when the cable stopped raising. He couldn't get it to go up or down.
He took the cable housing off, but it is jammed. Has anyone ever fixed one of these things, or can they even be fixed. If you had to replace yours, where did you get it from?
Thanks,
Colleen

Order one from a dealer. I wouldn't try to fix the old one. I support my tire with a strap when secured, the whole deal is very lightweight and cheesy.

Ozz,
Are you saying that you aren't using the original cable, or have you added a modification as an extra support?
Our other trailer had the same problem, we just carried the tire in the basement. That isn't an option with us hauling more stuff now.
I am just wondering if this is a problem that happens all of the time.

On my last Montana I had a failure on the spare holder. It came apart. The spool is made of plastic and it broke after I had lowered the spare. I found a replacement at a dealer. I had to cut the crank shaft off the old one and fit it to the new. then I could install the new one under the Montana.

We had ours fail about 6 months after we bought the rig. I was able to contact the manufacturer and they explained they had made some improvements to the previous design. They shipped me a new one directly for $25.00. The hoist wasn't that hard to replace. Here is their contact information:
Ishmael Precision Tool & Die
TECA
55 Industry Ct.
Troy, Ohio 45373-2368
Ph: 937-335-8070
Jack Spencer or Marvin
Hope this info helps out. OBTW, I have had the spare up and down a number of times since I replaced the hoist and no problems yet.
Jack

The first indication you have of how superiorly constructed they are is the firm feel of quality you get when cranking the shaft to lower the tire .

Jack,
Thanks for the manufacturer information. We are out of warranty so not sure they will help us out. I will try to get in touch with them, they can only say NO.
Brad,
This was the first time that we lowered the cable....we are batting a thousand. Guess this should be added to the PDI list for people.

Colleen, I had a tire shop raise the spare with a pneumatic wrench and he stripped the nylon gear. He ordered a replacement from Keystone and the replacement had a brass gear. Don't know what the dealer paid as it was his fault it broke. I would try Keystone first.....

I had a problem with my crank for the spare tire rack. I would crank it up but no matter how much I cranked it to tighten it it would not get tight. I put a chain and lock around the tire to support it to the frame, I know it won't fall while driving. No problem now!

When I had the 1st Mission tire failure my cable also got jammed when trying to raise the cable and tire. I just put the spare in the front compartment as I knew I was heading to the Fall rally in 2 weeks I decided to wait until I got to Keystone. Along with some other things they also replaced the entire spare tire mechanism.

My strap is a 'Fail safe' deal, I did nothing to the original assembly.

OK, this is a good wake-up call and a perfect example of "out sight/out of mind". We bought our 2000 305FKS TT "previously owned" several years ago. The spare tire has never been off - I have looked at it a few times to be sure it's there and that it at least looked like it had air in it. I'm not sure how it's attached. I wouldn't know how to get it off if I needed to! I guess I have some homework to do - don't want to wait 'til I need it to learn. I'm sure when I need it it will be raining, muddy, icy, freezing cold, at night, and on a steep incline (as usual per Mr. Murphy's laws).

VanMan,
Thankfully it was just cold and not wet when hubby had to take the cable housing off of the Monty. It did take him a little time to do so, and the Monty was on level ground.
I will contact Keystone to see if they will help us out. The dealership that we bought it from no longer is in business.
