How Much $$$ For Propane
Curious about what everyone is paying for propane. I have not bought any since April until yesterday. Cost was $3.50/gal.

Charlie it was $26.00 to fill the tank no matter what you got in Bastrop. This flat rate is a rip off!!! Texas is the only state where we have run into this.

Flat rate in the UP of MI. 30 lbs bottle = $30.00. Isn't propane a waste gas from the refinery process?

Here in Northern Idaho we are paying $2.89 a gallon. According to Flying J prices it seems to be all over the board in other states. See the following link for price comparisons across the country at Flying J stations:

bigmurf-
There are no waste gases in a refinery process. Propane is the third lightest component in the hydrocarbon chain known as C3, chemical formula C3H8. Not even the sour gas (H2S) that is extracted from the process is wasted. It is treated and a 99.99% pure pharmaceutical grade of sulphur is recovered and sold to the drug companies. The hydrogen is also recovered and used in other processes throughout the refinery.
Another so called waste gas that is extracted from the refinery process is ethyl-mercaptan, chemical formula C2H6S. Refined gas and natural gas do not have any smell unless there is sour gas mixed with it. As a result of the New London, Tx. school explosion on March 18, 1937 when some 300 students and teachers were killed it was mandated that stench (C2H6S) be mixed with all gas supplied to the public for sale. This is the smell emitted by propane gas, not the propane itself.
I apologize for the explanation on propane as a waste gas. This is off subject from the thread that I created. I was surprised at the $3.50/gal. I paid for propane yesterday and thought it to be a little high, but then again look at the price of diesel and gasoline.

Charlie,
I found that very informative, don't think it was off topic, but, if it was, I learned something, never a bad thing to learn something.
Thanks.
On Edit: We heat with propane here at the stick built, I am scared to find the price on the next fill up. GULP!!!!

Paid $3.28 gal. yesterday at our Shell station. Interesting our propane companies only have a flat rate. Some of the independent propane stations have per gal. rates. Usually I fill up at the Shell station where they have a free dump station. They only ask that you spend $5 but they don't push that. Easy to get propane and use the dump station.
On the road is a different story, I fill up where it is the most convenient for me or where I know where the best price is.

23.00 for the 30 gal tank(including Ohio state tax)... That is about 2.89(w/o tax) per gallon and has not changed since last year at this time. We were paying 1.79 winter of 06/07 in Arizona.
Charlie..I just hate it when I learn something..It is easier to believe the myths.

Have been gone for a few days.
The answer about the open flames one sees when passing by a refinery.....These are relief flares. The have pilot lights just as the oven in the Montana or the furnace in many stick houses. The fuel for the pilots is equivalent in composition to natural gas.
When there is a process upset the relief system in the processing unit is vented to the flare to keep the unit from over pressuring. It may appear wasted but in reality it is necessary to keep the system safe. No different than sitting at a red light with the motor idling on your truck. I understood the the term "waste" as something with no value, thus the reason for my answer.

I buy from an little independent propane seller. At the end of September, each 30 pound bottle cost 22 dollars to refill. I'm in the middle of Oklahoma. Don't know if anything has changed since the economic stuff happened.
