THIRD TURBO POW!!! - UPDATE

POW!! AGAIN!!! This time we got 12 miles from Elkhart before the POW. Truck is back at the Ford dealer. They think there is a faulty vein in the turbo and maybe a scored something or other. We'll find out tomorrow. We may have to rent a car as I have to fly out of Chicago on Monday

Okay, we got the truck back about Noon today (Saturday). The problem was in the turbo; it was rusted and corroded inside and had to be rebuilt. They said this caused sticking which caused a build up of back pressure, which caused the hose to blow. Neither one of us are diesel mechanics, so we have to take their word for it. We drove from Elkhart, IN to Chicago, IL this afternoon and the truck ran like a champ. I hope this is the end of the problem.

Pam, we had that twice on our 2005. We blew the turbo hose off. The final time they used a new style clamp and we had no more instances of that problem. I wonder if they're still using the old style on yours? They also have to follow Ford's instructions very closely. That has something to do with cleaning the mount for the hose, I think.

Or is yours a problem with the turbo itself? Ours was just a very loud bang followed by a near total loss of power. Blown off turbo hose in our case.

We didn't blow the clamp off, we blew a hole in the hose. The Ford Dealership in Moses Lake, Wa. replaced it under warranty with a metal hose. Have had no problems since.

Steve, we're waiting to hear from the Ford place about the faulty turbo vein. After the first POW they replaced the hose and both clamps. After the second POW they replaced one clamp, and said they thought the clamps had not been tightened to specs, and after I admired the mechanic's Snap-On torque wrench, too! After the third POW they are looking at the turbo itself. They think it was creating too much back pressure and that was what caused the blow outs. We'll see. I mentioned to them about using the heavier duty clamps, but just got a stare back. I'll keep everyone posted.

Interesting, I'm not aware of turbo vein/scoring causing too much boost unless its not modulating. Did the engine sound "different" just prior to the third pow? This suggests its spooling improperly and should hear that happening. It is very possible on pow that the turbo could get damaged from sudden release of back pressure. That stare back...hmmm Are they installing the short 45 degree "blue" hose on top of the engine? That only goes in one way as there are internal rib different location at either end that aligns to the depression in the turbo outlet and the inter-cooler feed pipe. Yes...seems odd your having this much difficulty getting it resolved.

noneck, the engine didn't sound different at all, and it was running normally at 10 psi, 1,900 rpm. Yes, they did install the short 45 degree blue hose, just as you described. Who knows, maybe they put it on upside down in the first place. As I mentioned in the "update" they rebuilt the turbo yesterday and the truck ran just fine today. I sometimes wish I was a mechanic myself, then I would understand a little better what was going on with our Big Betty Ford.

Glad to hear that you finally got it taken care of. It really puts one out when something like that is going on but once it’s over it’s a much better feeling.

Pam, I don't know that the clamp that cured ours was any heavier duty. I think it was just a new design to replace the design that kept failing. Since your problems came 3 or 4 years after ours, I imagine the "new design" clamp we got is now standard replacement issue. I do know if they don't properly clean the seat area it will not hold.

Let's hope your problem is cured.
