Engine / Tranny Question

On our way east from lake Raystown Pa yesterday I decided to follow a route the gps chose which included countless miles of 8 and 9 percent uphill grades. Some may have been more.
We have a 08 F350, 6.4 automatic.
About half way up the first long grade I noticed a change in the sound of the engine / transmission. At first I thought it was a fan running but then it almost acted like the transmission or torque converter was slipping. When I stepped on the accelerator the noise would change in intensity but the tach was steady. One time I decided to just put the accelerator to the floor and the noise went away??
I never felt any shuttering from the tranny and managed to pull all the grades.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

What you heard may have been the turbos kicking in.

John- what you described(on my 2006) is the cooling fan engaging. 1st time I heard it I thought something was wrong with engine or trans. Hope that's all it is with your noise!

As your cooling temp raises near about 210F your fan clutch will engage and make a somewhat load roaring noise and sometimes will sound as if your engine is speeding up but the truck speed stays the same. If your 6.4 goes into regen at this point your exhaust system will sound like a huge compressor when under an extreme load. This naturally is the extra burning of fuel to eliminate the soot build up and there is a horsepower decrease during this regen.
With the dual turbos on the 6.4 it is very unlikely you hear them as they operate on a curve from 0 to 50 psi; even at 50 psi the is no notable noise from the turbos.
Nice to have acurate gauges for your engine coolant, transmission, and engine oil in actual degrees, along with a good read out of your exhaust temp at the turbo exit.

Yes our 08 6.4L sounds the same on those very steep grades as explained above. First time we did a 9% grade we thought we broke the truck. We do have after market gages and watch them very closely on pulls like that. On PA 30 east to Harrisburgh the trans temp hit 225F.

Rich, you mention US 30 east to Harrisburg....I hope that wasn't the stretch between Breezewood and Gettysburg! That is a brutal piece of road to be hauling a trailer!

That's exactly where I was when all this was taking place. We turned off of 26 south around Hopewell ( a shortcut to 30) onto 915 which I think is a hiking trail because I didnt see any other motor vehicles along the way.

Yes I did that route once and am glad I had the exhaust brake going down hill. 20mph for trucks is too fast.

Been there, done that, got the T shirt, and SOLD IT.

Johnnyg, I just traced that route on the e-maps and SHEESH!, that's a tough one. You're fan clutch was doing it's job. The roar is a bit surprising at first but you'll get used to it. My '99 did it, my '08 does it also.

If you're ever on a piece of road that you feel ot too steep, and traffic is light, you can stop and drop your 4x4 transfer case into low range (if you have the manual transfer case, NOT THE SHIFT ON THE FLY system). This will reduce the strain on the transmission by 50% but your top speed is lilited to about 25. But you can pull most any hill will ease.

Thanks for all the info. I'm sure to noise must have been the fan according to what everyone has said.
I'm looking into a tuner that will display all the vital temps, pressures etc and if necessary improve the performance when needed.
