Install 5 th wheel hitch in a 2010 Dodge Ram

Are mounting brackets available for a 2010 Dodge Ram? I understand that the new Rams have cross members under the bed to mount the hitch to without modification is this so?

Can you tell the forum what kind/Brand of hitch your thinking of installing? There are many to choose from and they have different installation methods.

Did not realize a Dodge needed any modification to mount a hitch. My 2004.5 did not need any modification. Just bolted to frame existing holes, at least for a Reese select 16k hitch.

I have a 2010 on order and have ordered a Trailer Saver hitch from Hensley. The TS mounts on the Reese system and according to Hensley I needed special brackets for the 2010.

I ordered them with the hitch (from Hensley, $200) so unless they're working me over you'll need brackets. I'm trusting Hensley to know what's required.

They wanted to know If I was getting a long bed dually (yes) so that may be a factor as well. I don't know why this would matter. It could have just been a curiosity question.

BTW they were offering a special of $200 dollars off on the hitch so it all came out (of my pockets) in the wash.

I think the reason they asked if you were getting a long bed is because the Trailer Save hitch doesn't come with a slider that is needed if you have a short bed. You will like the Trailer Saver. We've had ours for 6 1/2 years now and haven't had one problem with it. It provides a softer ride for the rig and you don't get the pounding inside the truck that you get with the solid Reese type hitches.

Orv:

Thanks for the feedback on TS hitch. I'm relying heavily on this forum for advice on what to buy for our adventure. It's costing me tons of money to follow the advice so it's very helpful (for my sanity) to hear good things about my future rig.

I suspect without the forum I would be experiencing short term savings and long term headaches.

pbahlin: I'm looking at purchasing a 2010 Dodge DRW long-bed (due in next week to the dealer) but I've been running the same question by a couple of hitch dealers and getting different answers -- B&W (actual factory) told me that their turn-over ball needs nothing special - the bed and all rigging underneath is the same as the 2009. I called Reese and was told that the crossmembers are located differently and I'd need their 'new' underbed rails that have some type of spacing links added for my Reese Signature hitch if I decide to move it accross. Back to B&W - they told me that they installed one at a truck rodeo a week back and the old one fit (again, this was factory engineer and sales -- I spoke to both because I wonder about the cam lock holding ,) Reese could give me no actual installs so.... I'd take both with a grain of salt.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Trailersaver.. a very wise investment if the wallet can handle the initial cost!!
