Never been to the North East before, will be leaving FL this April travelling up the coast all the way to Maine. I would like some ideas on where to camp. We would like to see: Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Cape Hatteras, Savannah, Wash DC, New York, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Bangor and any interesting points in between. I know this is a large list but really looking for some good advice on CG's. Would like to stay at places that offer trips and tours into big cities and surrounding places to see. I guess looking forward to centrally located parks.

PM me or reply to this post would be great. Prefer rustic, but realize that may not be possible, will be travelling with sis and BIL and they require full hookups so I imagine alot of state and federal parks may not be options.

This will probably be our one and final trip up this way so would like to take in as much as possible. Planning on exiting Vermont/New Hamsphire with the fall colors.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks everyone in advance for replying!!!!!!

Love the info so far, please keep em coming. We will be all over the NE this summer and not sure exactly where to stay or what to see other than the typical tourist places; Niagara Falls, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Central Park, Coney Island, Liberty Bell, Maine Lobster (this we'll eat of course). I know this is a small list and there are lots to see but just need some help. Any suggestions will be appreciated......

We live in New Bern, NC, 3 hours north of Myrtle Beach on Hwy 17. Our shakedown cruise in a few weeks will be to Myrtle Beach. There are some nice campgrounds on the beach but you will probably need to make a reservation that time of year as it will be busy. Just north of there in Wilmington, NC is the battleship North Carolina that you can tour. It's facinating and a great tour. If you want to stop by in New Bern, we would love to meet you and show you our historic city. We'll be celebrating 300 years in 2010. There is a KOA in New Bern and we'd be happy to show you around town. From there, you can drive to the ferry to Okrakoke Island and then to Hattaras Island, up to Kitty Hawk and then drive back to the mainland and be on your way.

We always try to find a Passport America CG on our travels. It doesn't mean we won't stop elsewhere, but we like those half price places. One such stop was the Anvil CG in Williamsburg, VA. We stayed 8 days at the Passport rate. There is a shuttle that has a stop at the park. We visited Historical Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. There is plenty to do and it has much historical significance related to the birth of the nation. The remainder of our trip south to Florida consisted of one night stops which doesn't seem to meet your criteria.

We enjoyed meandering up the SC coast, starting near Savannah, GA and stayed at Tybee Is. Then up to Beaufort (stayed at Hunting Is. SP. Nice! Then did Charleston, and up to New Bern. For DC, Cherry Hill CG, just north, has full concierge service and shuttles to Metro. Have heard good things!

Phil,
Put Newport, RI on your to-do list and stay at the Fisherman's Memorial State Park (they have full hook-up). It is 15 minutes from Newport, and near the Block-Island ferry.

You will need to make space in the basement and stop at LL Bean, in Maine. We stayed at the Freeport/Durham KOA, about 10-15 minutes from LL Bean.

If you are retired military, stop at Lunga Park, Quantico. See the new USMC Meuseum. Also, only about 35 miles to downtown DC.

If you are going that far north, goodness sakes alive do NOT miss Bar Harbor and the National park there. OHHH MYYYY

And, highly recommend Camden Maine, not sure there is a prettier little town anywhere.

South Carolina, you could consider staying somewhere like Walterboro area and driving to Charleston and Savannah from there for day trips. Might get you into a campground for a week instead of more frequent moves. Don't miss the plantations, they are ALL fab, if you get there in April, some have the most wonderful display of azaelas - - will take your breath away.

The Outer Banks are fab as well, we stayed one time in Manteo at a campground there, been a few years, not sure they are there??? not sure they are not.

Boston, stay OUT in the hinterlands, but, close enough to get to the rail system, good parking for big trucks, take the rail right downtown. Having driven there one time many moons ago, we cannot advise it. The most interesting drivers there, they have been known to do uturns INSIDE tunnels. Yep indeedy! Interesting.

Don't miss Plymouth Plantation in MA and of course, Cape Cod. Again, stay about half way out the Cape, and drive to destinations, don't forget Provincetown, great shopping, gals will be able to get all holiday shopping done!

Hershey PA, Lancaster County PA.

While on your trip to the great Northeast, a stop in Lancaster PA would be worth the time. There are several in the area. Country Acres is a good one (never been there because they are always full. Hope to get there this spring.) Others that we have camped in would be Hershey Highmeadow (Hershey PA), Mill Bridge Village, Roamer's Retreat, Starlite (what a view), Pinch Pond (in Manheim PA) to name a few. You can easily get to Philadelphia from anyone of these. Several years ago, we camped at Drummer Boy in Gettysburg and took a charter bus to Washington, DC.

Narrows Campground near Bar Harbor, ME. You can catch the free bus to Acadia Nat'l Park from there or go to Bar Harbor. Be sure to visit Southwest Harbor. Many places to visit there. Twin Mountain KOA in NH is a great place as well.
If in CT, you may want to consider Strawberry Park in Preston. Very near the Casinos (Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun).
Bershires in MA is a good place, but campground name fails me.
Burlington, VT has several good campgrounds nearby.
Bottomline, make reservations well in advance.

I was born on Long Island so here are some sights to see. While in NYC, try to see a broadway show. You can pick up unsold tickets the day of the performance and there usually no bad seats in a broadway theater. Radio City Music Hall and the Rockettes are great. South Street Seaport at the tip of Manhattan has sailing ships and a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The USS Intrepid, a WWII aircraft carrier that is now a great air and space museum. Take a circleline tour around Manhattan Island. They are guided tours on a boat and you can see all the bridges and a good look at the island. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is a must. Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planatarium are both wonderful to see. The top of the Empire State Building has a spectacular view. I can also list several places to see on Long Island. Teddy Roosevelt's house at Sagamore Hill, etc. How many weeks are you planning to spend in the Big Apple? How is this for overload?

Jim & Vickie, At this point we are planning on three weeks for NYC and another three weeks in Hershey. I might be mistaken on the total time as my BIL is doing most of the time planning. We are 1000 Trails member and there is a preserve in Hershey that we will be staying at for about three weeks, which is our maximum stay.

I was kidding about the weeks since I gave you so much to choose from but you can surely do it justice in three. I'm not familiar with them but you might want to look into NYC tours where you can get hotel, shows, tours, etc. for a package price, even if it's only for a few days. Getting around the city by taxi is fairly reasonable but you can always walk and really see it. The world famous Tavern On The Green Restaurant has a pre-theater menu at five o'clock that is roughly 1/2 price and about 2/3 portions thats very reasonable. If you want any more info, I'll try to help you out. I'm not as familiar with the city as is my nephews and nieces and I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you plan your stay.

Hanscom AFB has a FamCamp for the Boston area.

Also, I would assume, Cape Cod would be on the agenda. Here is a map of campgrounds around Cape Cod on Microsoft Live Maps

Drag the map and it will change the location of the CG's.

Ft Meade, MD FAMCAMP is very nice and a short drive to the Metro Stop to get to DC.

Jacksonville, NC Onslow Beach FAMCAMP is between the water and inland water way.

Quantico, VA FAMCAMP is rustic but great view on the reservior and again drive to Metro Stop to get to DC.

Amish country in PA has a great list. Roamers Retreat, Quarryville, and to the east close to Vally Forge is Warwick Woods.

Let me know if you need more info on any of these.
