I have been a huge fan of shotguns, rifles and handguns since I was a young boy. Guess it has to do with the “cap” guns we all had as kids. Acquired and sold/traded off most throughout the years. Now, I am a Sig fan through and through these days. Both my wife and I have carry permits with her Sig being a p238 (380) and mine a p938 (9mm). For taking down bad guys that may happen into our house is the Sig 220(45). Mostly, what I like about both “carry” handguns is the ability to be “locked and cocked” with an external safety. I know a lot will disagree with this, “locked and cocked”, but the 1911 style has been with me for 50 years and am comfortable with it, which is the best feel for me.

I agree with DQdick. I am Current LEO and will fer my permit when I retire. Don't show it or talk about it while traveling around the country. Someone breaks in while I am in it. Bad for them and I will take my chances in court on self defense!

Being a retired LEO I have to qualify with my home department once a year. As long as I qualify high enough they certify me for what is generally a universal concealed carry (federal).

However, if I did not have that, or for that matter any type of CC permit, I still would not worry about having firearms in my FW. If you are using a recreational FW as a residence then it is the same as your stick and brick. If the authorities have some type of probable cause and it is enough to secure a search warrant then I suppose they could come inside your FW and seize your firearms, not a very likely situation though.

Smith and Wesson.. I still like 'em. Just bought Sue a S&W M&P Shield 9mm; no safety.
I borrowed it for a few days and carried it, I loved it, so she came up and poked $400 in my pocket and told me to get one. I think she wanted hers back.. Now when we go walking, we joke we are taking 'The twins'

I found a NRA Instructor here in K.C that teaches 'Advanced defensive Pistol courses' so I am taking that, been looking on Youtube at them, really worthwhile. A good Youtube for all to watch is called 'The art of the Dynamic Handgun' really good stuff. It is by Travis Haley.

Sadly, when anyone has to go out walking they have to have some sort of protection. Since we live close to the recent “Ferguson” incident this is the case too, not only out walking, but shopping where there are lots of bad people. The S&W Shield is a dependable, well priced handgun with lots of good reviews since it appeared on the market. Now, all you need to do is go to the bank, draw out your kids college savings to buy ammo, and go shoot about a few hundred rounds through it and break it in.

Jim, they are a sweet weapon, I was carrying my Glock 26 Gen 3, the Shield is flatter and much more balanced.
10-4 on the ammo, costly.. when you can find it. I am about 1/2 way through my last 1,000 rounds now. My wife finds the shield's recoil much softer than the J-Frame 38 airweight she was using.
If it is not comfortable to shoot, you won't use it enough to be good with it.

We rarely feel the need to be armed when out and about. We do have a CCP and plenty of carry handguns.Yes anything can happen at any time to anyone. We might have a weapon in the car and truck who knows. We might have one somewhere in the Montana aso.If we feel the need to carry when out and about we will and we have on several occasions. IMO this part of Florida near Orland is a violent area but the violence is in general restricted to the Orland area and is drug on drug bad guy on bad guy. We have no need to go to Orlando. When in travel that is a different story as we in general do not know the area or the local we are in.

My favorite is the Glock 36 gen 3 45 cal and the small Bersa 380. My CCP is a tool to be used when needed.

Excellent point Ozz. When I was a licensed dealer, I'd get a lot of questions about which gun was best for self defense. To sum up a fairly long discussion that would ensue such question, the answer was "a gun you will practice with". Even a .22 rim fire is preferable in the hands of an owner who knows how to use and can place their shots on target under stress than .500 S&W in the hands of someone who is afraid of it because the one time they fired it was a painful experience. For home defense, I would often recommend a shotgun over a pistol because it was obvious the buyer was going to take it home and stick it in a drawer and never practice with it. While not practical for carry, there are few things scarier to a would be thief IMHO than a frightened homeowner racking a 12 gauge shotgun.

I always have my Colt Lawman MarkIII .357 close by. We really like it because when target shooting I can load 38's in it for Deanna. She still flinches a little when firing but I wouldn't mess with her when she has it in her hands! lol Have never owned a S&W but not opposed to having one. Tim

Jim you don't need to float a loan to shoot. Reload. You can carry all the equipment you need in a shoe box and it's quicker to reload the go buy a box of ammo and you get better ammo. I'm not trying to sell you anything but go to my web site and look. I can go hunting, take a box for each rifle and shoot a thousand rounds.

I am at the point in my shooting career that reloading would not be a viable option. Years ago in the 70’s I had an RCBS Rock chucker, I think it was, for my reloading with many dies to go with it. Lived in a semi country area where you could shoot outside as much as you liked. Now, I am at the point where I don’t get a chance to go out much to the range and play, so I couldn’t justify the costs involved……various powders, bullet weights and dies, etc. That has become a bygone era in my life. If ever we all get to a rally together we could to go a range shoot at some paper. I never get tired of hearing a gun go BANG, or hearing a Harley with straight pipes.

I tried to unload my S&W J-frame Airweight 642-2 special +P
was going to clean the lint out of it. Cylinder was jammed, I huffed and I puffed and I, with both thumbs got it open...bent the swing-out assembly
I never even fired the gun...I did read up on the problem, general consensus was to tighten the ejector rod...which I did.
Anyhou, I called S&W service, they said no problem sir, we are sending you a prepaid UPS label, no charge for shipping or repairs on your gun.
Good on them..

I'm thinking Keystone could learn a thing or two about customer service from S&W !

My favorite carry is my S&W, 9mm Shield. My favorite to shoot is a Springfield Armory XD, 9mm. Very comfortable and accurate and it carries 15 rounds.

Love that Shield!
On accuracy with different guns, hickok45 has a great Vid on the subject. If you haven't seen his work here is one on accuracy:
The guy has hands like a NBA player. He is an interesting fellow with more rounds down-range than most.
Thanks for jumping in nowinter.

I always liked S&W revolvers. Relatively easy to work on and get parts for. Never cared a lot for their semi autos though, with the exception of the Model 52.

Unusual, a pistol that only fires wadcutters. But it has a good reputation,

We shoot at a nearby range here in Florida several times a winter along with other snowbirds. We no longer shoot trap or skeet as we lost our abilities on that. We just like to keep our skills up with the handguns and we have been sport shooters for decades.
