tx287 & 281
On Tuesday morning we tow from oasis rv park outside amarillo to texas route 287 to wichita falls, then on Wednesday morning from there to santo on route 281. Truck guide says I have to deal with a couple low clearance places of 14' and couple of 13'6". Oh joy, figure I have like two inches to spare if these are really accurate. Any thing I should know about for these to segments? Appreciate it. John

For sure there is no problem on 287. I also have never taken that part of 281 towing, but 281 is frequently recommended as a good route for snowbirds heading to the valley as an alternate to I-35 and all its traffic.

We nearly always take the US highways versus the interstates. We have no problem with clearance on either of those roads.

I drive 281 from San Antonio to Jacksboro and back at least once a year. The 13'6" railroad bridge about 10 miles south of Mineral Wells is not a problem for me. I can't remember any other low bridges on that part of the route. Hope this helps.

Thanks much folks. Will just do the very slow creep under the 13'6" ones and call it safe. Stayed in coffee creek rv resort last year near santo, so thought it was worth a revisit. John

As a trucker for 20 years logging 3,000,000 + miles pulling 13'6" trailers I NEVER had a problem with anything marked as 13'6".

I have always wondered if Clearance 13'-6" meant the the actual overhead height was 13'-6" or if it meant there was adequate clearance for a 13'-6" vehicle.

in most cases the 13'6" is the lowest point unsurely at the curb. Stay near the middle and all should be good.
and don't ask me how I know about this.

All good to hear as I surely didn't wish to argue with the wife about stationing her on the roof to see how close we actually got. John
