Smart Surge failure

Our Progressive Industries SSP-50 saved us from bad campground wiring 2 nites ago. Yeah! Progressive says mail it in and they will repair or replace. I have 2 questions - we are on the road - how do we insure we're protected without it? How have you handled this? Boondock for a couple weeks? Also, reading some of the posts, it looks like we should upgrade to the EMSPT50C. Has anyone upgraded during this process? How does that work? When we called Progressive they were less than helpful which surprised me after reading all the glowing reviews here. Couldn't even tell me how to find a dealer who carries them.
Thanks for your help.

RV'ers went bunches of years without the current (and darned handy) surge protectors. I'd imagine you could enjoy your RV without it while PI does the repair and not have to boondock. The choice is your call. No answer on the upgrade.

Look on amazon for the pt50, that's where we got ours. Had four saves here in sw florida last winter and on our six month tour north and west only had one save and we were in a bunch of campgrounds. I would guess it all depends on where and the type of parks you use. We had three different parks in ny state and pa two years ago that had power issues. One georgia park lost their xformer right before we arrived last fall. John

I carry a spare just for that reason and it's also why I prefer the portable.

Since out last unit was a 30 amp unit and I kept the surge protector from it to use in CGs that may not have 50 amp service. I carry it with us all the time also and have a pigtail to make the adjustment between the 30 amp and 50 amp cord. I do have to remind the DW and myself we are on 30 amp when we are hooked up to it because it is easy to pop that breaker on the post if you are not careful. If you carry a tester with you to check the power outlets on the post you should be OK without a surge protector BUT I myself would not gamble. Those electronics in the units now are really sensitive and it costs a bunch to replace them.

Thanks for all your responses. We mailed our Surge Guard to Progressive Industries today. So we'll see what happens next. A spare sounds like a safe idea. Thanks again,
