REAR AXLE RATIO FORD F350

I'm seriously looking at a 2011 F350 diesel and am of course wanting a truck with a good ratio for towing. My 2005 has a 3.73 ratio and that was what I was hoping to get in the next truck. However my mechanic says that, although he can change the gear from a 3.55 to a 3.73, he does not see that the diesel model comes in the 3.73(or higher), only in 3.33 and 3.55. The gas model does show that it does have the 3.73. Can you Ford guys out there confirm that this is indeed the case or do some of you have a recent year model with the 3.73? As always, thanking you in advance for any info.

The diesel 350 SRW has a 3.55 as standard. The dually has the 3.73.

The diesel did not have an optional gear. either it was 3:31 or 3:55,can't remember this was on the single rear wheel. with the torque the new trucks put out, around 800 ft pds. pulling won't be a problem. I have not heard of anyone complaining about lack of pulling power

Standard is 3:55 optional is 3:31. You will be very pleased with the 3:55 and the 800 pounds of torque.

I have a 2011 F350 SRW with a 3.55. My 2008 F250 SRW was a 3.73. The 2011 outpulls the 2008 significantly. You won't have a problem with the 3.55's!!!! The only way to get 3.73s is to get a dually. Get a F450 if you want to have a 4.xx rear end but don't expect mileage or to go fast.

The gearbox with the 6.7L motor is geared very different from the 6.4L (or 6.0L) motors. First and second are very "short" gears. That makes it easy to get a heavy load (my rig is 15.500 lbs.) moving. The other four gears then make it easy to travel at highway speed with a minimum of RPMs (i.e. better fuel mileage).

A few years ago these trucks had 500 pound feet of torque so you needed lower gears but now with 800 pound feet you will do just fine with higher gears. No worry.

I have a F350 dually, diesel with 3.73 rear end and like it. Like mlh stated, the extra torque and the new transmission on the new 6.7 engine is plenty for my fiver.

John, When I ordered my 2012 350 SRW, I wanted 3.73, too. Dealer added Plow Package, and it came w/3.73s! Just saying. Also got the towing prep and drop in hitch (Reese Elite/Ford). Very nice. Good luck.

Yup, when I ordered mine, no option. However I can reinforce that my truck is the best puller I have ever owned, and plenty of excess power with that 800 pounds of torque combined with a six speed trans.

I also have a 2011 F-350 6.7d, 4x4, CC, 3:55 rear end. The pulling capabilities of this truck are unbelievable, I always have to use my cruise control or I'm over the speed limit in no time. Truly a pleasure to drive. Getting 12.3 mpg pulling 3900 FB, haven't driven it without pulling.

That's one way they've improved the capability and increased the mpgs. Because the engine and trans are more improved, Ford can still do more with the 3.55 versus the 3.73. The horsepower and torque are still outstanding so I think you would do fine with an SRW, with the 3.55. It would still give you better numbers than your '05 with the 3.73.

But it's the dually that's on my radar. The numbers gain and increased margin for towing, the 3.73 diff means it's a beast that will probably get some pretty good numbers when not towing, and plenty when I do.

Quote "although he can change the gear from a 3.55 to a 3.73" ... comparing way shorter gearing, if I were tuning my drag car for optimum finish line rpm, I'd see what a 2 tooth difference would make. For the cost of swapping out the gears on this truck ... you'll not see a great difference with a diesel's ground pounding ... stump pulling ... raw torque.

I was concerned about the 3.55's as my GMC had 3.73's. I have been very satisfied with the 3.55's this being our fourth year snowbirding in FL from MA.

I am very happy with my '12 F350 6.7 3.55. No problem pulling the Monte over Colorado mountain passes.

With my 2013 GMC 3500 SRW 3.73 I am getting 12.3 mpg towing and over 20 mpg as a daily driver at only 6,000 miles. As mileage is supposed to increase at 30K-50K miles I am thrilled with these mpgs. Whatever happened to everyone needing 4.10 gears to pull our 5vers? The more powerful the diesels and transmission the more extinct that gear ratio is becoming... Can the 3.73 be far behind?

dsprik... the 4.10 is for the trucks that need to pull out the truck with the 3.73 and its trailer when they get stuck.

My 2012 F-350 came with the snow plow package as one of the options but had the 3.55 rear end. I questioned the dealership because I felt I needed the higher rear end. They claimed I would not need it. They were correct, sometimes it is hard to tell the Monte is even hooked up.

And here we sit with our '08 350, with the 6.4 and a 4.30 rear end! great pulling, not so great mileage. And as much as i Like what I hear and see about the newer models, my financial model says no upgrading! Oh, well, I bought with a 20 year plan in mind...

A interesting thread. You guys with the SRW 3.55 gears a couple of questions.

What is the GAWR on your trucks and actual empty axle weights?
What are your RPM's @ 60 mph.

My Ram with 3.73's is 1500rpm @ 60mph. I am not used to the low rpm's but it does not feel like it is lugging. I wanted 4.10 but could not find one when I was buying.
