Another tank failure

Yes another holding tank failed. The gray tank blew with a bang that shook the RV.Yes it was full or close to it.It did not back up into the shower tub or the sinks. Why are they called holding tanks.

We usually leave it open but closed it two days ago to help flush the black tank as we are leaving in the AM.

That is it. We are done.

Unbelievable. Sorry to hear that, Rich. Any way that the shop that last replaced it didn't get it right?

That's too bad Rich, the tanks are not like the earlier ones. I remember them being made of a thick hard rubber or something like that. my Gray tank has a rupture on the top seam so I never let it reach the top , I will replace it with a thick black one custom made for my Monty. if I remember right you have had other tanks go on you before.

I can't believe this has happened to you again! If anyone deserved to have perfect holding tanks for the rest of their RVing life it was you guys. My first reaction is to encourage you to hang in there and rely on your extended warranty again. However, you are probably thinking about the old definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome......

Only one explanation ... you're in an area of heavy water ... I know ... not a time for levity.

You have set a record for tank issues. A frustrating nightmare, so sorry to hear it happened again.

I am not blaming the victim here at all but perhaps you are using some weird product(soap or tank cleaner)that is incompatible with the plastic tank. There has to be a reason why all these tanks keep splitting in the same unit. So sorry for your ongoing nightmare Rich.

We do not use tank additives on a regular basis just Oder control when needed. This grey tank was not overfilled as it would have backed up into the tub and sinks. Two days of two people showering will not fill a tank let alone overfilling it. Use the extended warranty again of course that is why we always buy them but that means a month or more of down time.

"doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome" you expressed it perfectly. We have zero confidence in the reliability of this RV.For those who these things serve you well carry on. We are done.

Sorry to hear it happened again. Could it be something about how they are laid out under there?

Rich,
I can feel your pain. So sorry for you.
Was that tank supported from below and did it have the flex connections?
Why not get a heavy duty one made to replace?

For those of us who have seen how the tanks are constructed and how they balloon out as they fill, it is easy to understand how they can blow out. The tank is constructed by being machine formed in a heated press out of a sheet of abs plastic that is not that thick. What comes out is a container with a one inch lip around the top. The actual top of the tank is another single sheet of abs that is bonded to that one inch wide lip. Tanks only supported by a rail on each long side under that lip. As said earlier, these thin tanks expand when filled which stresses that bonded joint. Cure- thicker tank material with support under the tanks in a few places. For someone that has a tank failure and can't fix it themselves, it is a huge hit in time and money. I don't believe the tank quality is there...no supports under them is another problem...no real quality tank monitor system is another nail in the coffin. John

except for the fresh water tank which is made from a different material ALL of our OEM holding tanks have now failed First the Galley tank, then the black tank and now the gray tank. They all failed when the RV had been stationary for some time. We always leave the galley and gray tank valves OPEN and only close them a day or two before we dump the black tank.

Those of us that understand know the galley tank and gray tank will back up into the shower tub or galley sink if over filled. The black tank will force its way up through the john. Looking at this failure only nothing backed up into the tub. The valve had only been closed for two days. That would be 4 showers and teeth brushing.

We have been through this before with our 06 3400. We supported the tanks it did not help it is the quality of the tanks. We will have it repaired and we do have a Extended Warranty .We have always had one but we are done with Montana.

Just for the record. In the 10 years we have had our two Montana's our experience with Keystone /Montana has been 100 % positive. Dealers, Service center, service techs and the many Montana folks at all levels of the organization.

The problem is my two Montana's have had very high failure rate that no one else on this forum has experienced. Rich and Montana just do not gel.

Sorry to hear of this. It does seem that you’ve had a few issues following you concerning the tanks. If you switch brands of campers how do you know that something like that wouldn’t happen on a different model?

Aren’t these tanks manufactured somewhere other than Keystone?

i followed you, and DeanVP with your Montana problems. Its unfortunate some of the things you two have dealt with.Have not heard much from Dean on RvNet, I believe he still has his 3400RL.

You mention not overfilling, its crazy we have overfilled the grey tank 2-3 times, to the point it backed up in the shower. I never leave the valves open on either the galley or grey tanks. I usually dump all the tanks every 4-5 days, but on occasion as said we have overfilled the grey tank. I have traveled with full tanks to get somewhere to dump, and in the nearly 9 years with my 2008 3400RL not a tank issue. As said its crazy one will have problems, and others don't.

Sorry to hear yet another tank failure, and sorry to hear what sounds like you being done with Montana, good luck with your next choice.

Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket tank replacement manufacturer and or anyone tried using an aluminum tank?
