Keeping threads on topic

I know that we need to keep our threads on topic but once in a while it just happens naturally that we stray a little. For example, in the thread on fuel prices, I inserted a post about my calculations on the break-even point between for the fuel for diesel and gas engine vehicles. I don't know if this was "legal" or not since I didn't mention what I had seen for prices at various stations. Did I do wrong? I noticed that a moderator included a bunch of posts in his/her post and mentioned we need to keep on topic. I'm just a little confused here. Can someone help? Steve R. do you have an answer?
