Maybe I'm a Prude

I have a Facebook page, not necessarily by choice, but our DDIL posts pictures of our grandchildren so that part is great. So I can't get over how often people post things with F**k in it. I think that if they really want someone to support their cause logic would work better than a profanity.

I totally agree. Profanity is one thing that will cause me to block someone on FB instantly and will cause me to change TV stations.

It's not just FB. Just watch a few of the shows that come on at 7 and 8 eastern time and see what kids have to watch these days. I'm just glad I'm not having to counsel kids and explain things based on what is common place on TV today.

Profanity adds nothing. If you can't say something without it just keep your mouth shut.

I have never signed up for FB and never will. The DW is on it and keeps track of grandkids and family. Maybe her "friends" list isn't as extensive because she has never read a post with that sort of profanity in it. She was under the impression that FB would delete the post if words such as F**K were posted.

Using profanity as a common part of speech demonstrates (IMHO) a lack of control. Potty mouths do not impress me.
Full disclosure... I sometimes (rarely) have a moment where one slips by me.
DW uses Facebook. I deleted mine and no longer use it and don't miss it.

No need to even be on Facebook here and without it we are more than able to frequently keep in touch with those that really matter.

There are a lot of bad mannered people nowadays, we tend to void them from our lives.

I have a FB account and almost never go on it. But DW is on it every day to check on the kids, grand kids and the great grand kids. Lots of pictures and what they are doing. Ok that being said I agree people just don't have any manners especily the young ones. Don't take off their hats in a restaurant, don't know how to use a knife and fork. Like shoveling food into their mouths. In waiting ares they never get up and offer a lady a seat. Even a pregnant woman or senior citizen. When I grew up my dad would have slapped me up the side of my head. Ok off the soap box.

I completely agree, not just in places like FB, but in every day conversation. I can't understand why some people can't carry on a routine conversation without using the F word 3 times in every 4 sentences, without care as to who is near enough to hear. Makes them sound dumb, immature, illiterate, inconsiderate, crude, rude, ....

It starts early. I retired from teaching in 2012, and the last 5 years I was at the high school, the F-bomb could be heard in the halls, in the lunchroom, outside coming from the lines of kids waiting for the busses, at sports events. . . nearly everywhere. It didn't seem to bother the speakers that they were offending the people around them, either. I knew most of the parents (very small town), and they didn't speak like that.

I thought less and less people talked like that. My wife says I live a very sheltered life. I'll take it.

From my working life it seemed to be very much regional. I worked regularly with our customers and consulting engineering firms for extended times on multiple projects all over the US and got to know a lot of people. And from my experience, those people from the northeast heavy population centers were the greatest offenders of the F word. I got to be friends with many of them over the years, greatly respected their expertise in their fields, and completed many successful projects with them. But I got to where I would beg off if they wanted to go out to dinner, or for drinks after work, or even lunch because I knew I would here the F work from the time we arrived until the time we left, even sitting in crowded restaurants. Other parts of the country it was just not nearly as prevalent.

I talk to people all over the US and never hear any profanity. We hear people from the big cities are more rude but I don't find that to be true. I will say the people from the north Georgia mountain area are the most polite. They call you Mister. I'm Mister Lynwood. It is just the way they are.

It just seems like our language has been deteriorating over our lifetime. Words that were "wash your mouth with soap" cuss words when we were kids are now readily acceptable on TV and in common usage. We still cringe when we hear them. Words that were absolutely unacceptable even 20 years ago now seem to be the norm. It's on clothing, graffiti, TV (it may be bleeped but you still know what was said), advertising and on and on. Is there nothing sacred anymore? Not sure!

As for social media like Facebook. I have to agree that there is much that we would like to avoid, but at least for us it does have redeeming values that overshadow the negatives. As others have said we can keep in touch with friends and family, but we have also found old friends from high school that otherwise we would have not crossed paths with again in this lifetime.

I have been around and have heard it all. It does not bother me. It was no different in the 50's.60's 70's etc. The present generation is always worse than the previous one and our generation was always the best.
