Marines and the police
The following is supposedly a true story relating a situation that actually occurred in Los Angeles.

The Marines were backing-up LAPD on a call that someone had broken into a store.

At the scene, the cop told the Marines to "cover" him as he approched the store (to police, "cover" means to point your weapons in the direction of the threat, to Marines it means lay down a base of fire!).

The Marines promptly laid down a base of fire. The Marines fired 178 rounds before they stopped shooting.

The thief, probably a little scared at this point, called 911 and reported, "They're shooting at me!".

Even though it's an Urban Legend, it is a fantastic read.

Marines don't cover police. That would be martial law, wouldn't it?

As a retired cop you would NEVER enter a building where a suspect was hiding. Even in a riot situation or the Marines wouldn't be there, it would be the National Guard.
The cop would sent in a K-9 unit. Seen it done plently of times. The dog always gets its man!!!

Osama Bin Laden is in the desert, with about 40 of his fighters. Two sand dunes in front of him, he see's a lone Marine who's waving at him. Bin Laden directs one of his fighters to take care of the infidel.
The fighter runs straight at the Marine yelling AYAYAYAYAY! The marine drops over the back side of the hill, and all you see of the fight is clothes, weapons and arms and legs flying. Shortly the Marine emerges with the head of his opponent and waves it in the air. OOHRAH!
Bin Laden tells five of his fighters to take care of the Marine. Away the run AYAYAYAYAY! Again, the Marine disappears over the backside of the dune. Again, clothes, weapons, arms and legs are flying. Again the Marine reappears with the heads of all five and again shouts OOHRAH!
Enraged, Bin Laden sends the remaining 34 fighters to kill this Marine. Again, back over the sand dune, arms, legs, clothing flying, but this time a lone fighter crawls back over the hill all the way back to Bin Laden. By this time the Marine reappears at the top of the sand dune.
The fighter says 'It's a trick! Don't send anybody else! There's two of them!
