I spoke to the rv service center here in Albuquerque and said it would take 4 to 10 hours to install with some fiberglass work on the existing vent... Total cost would be close to 2k...

I have looked at these in the past and actually bought one of the "portable" versions. It worked fair at best but I would NOT install one on an RV. If your full timing and not going to move around it might save you a little butane. But if your a weekend warrior I don't think the hassle is worth the very marginal benefit. I would go with a electric/gas version since you don't pay any more for using extra electricity at most weekend campsites..... On the other hand if your looking at one for your stick and brick house then there is some benefit in that it uses a lot less gas (they only make these in a gas fired version no electric). However your going to be a long time paying out the substantial higher purchase price vs a conventional unit and good luck finding someone to work on them. Might be some value for someone who either lives off the grid and or is extremely environmentally sensitive.

I talked at length with a factory rep at our local RV show this past Friday about tank less HW. He said they have improved the issue with their sensitivity to water flow rates as in older campgrounds causing operating issues. He mirrored words of DQDick's previous reply ... they do not have the capacity to make colder water sourced in winters really hot ... just warm. His customers are generally satisfied during the midyear ... much less so during winter months.

Have good friends with a new MH and are still have Flow problems with their Tankless water heater. When they don't have enough flow they have no Hot Water.

In our last travel trailer I installed a Suburban IW60 on-demand tankless water heater. It was about the same size as the water heater I removed and weighed less (since it has no tank full of water). It was great! I like a long shower and I could take a shower while the wife was running hot water in the kitchen and I felt no change in water temperature. Link below to site.

Not sure about the 55k btu rv units but I installed a small (120k btu) NR501-OD-LP Noritz unit for an outdoor shower I built. It will trigger at .5 gpm (15k btu) so works great in low flow situations. I will add that they are very efficient - we have hooked to a grill (5 gal) propane tank and have gotten somewhere between 30 and 50 showers from the tank in the last year. Very efficient!! For the RV unit, $1,200 would take a very long time to get any payback.

My son installed a Rehni (not sure of spelling) brand tankless in his house... works great... only issue he has is Lowes sells the units, however, Rehni will only supply parts to licensed, registered plumbing techs.........

These things are a joke. I have a 12 gallon hot water heater runs on propane or 110. Never run out of hot water and no problems. Had a tankless at home nothing but problems finally threw it in the trash bin. There is no savings with these things. Takes 10 years to break even and that does not include maintenance. I have been to this rodeo and it is a laugh. Just my 25 cents.
