Slide Support, to be or not to be.
Randye Here, I found a section in the owners manual that states you should use support jacks under slides if your going to use them for an extended time. I when to our local suppiler and he said some think you should, some don't. Which is it? We are very close to being able to hit the road, Maybe a couple of weeks plus or minus. We are getting pretty excited about now. thanks for any input you might have.

Congratulations on hitting the road!!! Have fun!!
A question..If you put slide supports under your slides and the groud is soft and the trailer settles will your slide supports settle the same...Don't think so. Now if you are going to be on a concrete pad and there will be no movement up or down in the soil I wouldn't hesitate to use them, but I don't think that it would be good for the slides to use them on soil. Just my opinion

Even on a concrete pad, What happens if one of your tires goes flat and you have the outside of the slide supported ?
Slides are pretty much self supporting. Manufacture says no support.

Or when the weight of the waste tanks cause the frame to settle, yet the slide supports do not adjust accordingly. Seems there's a stress on the slide rails if you use supports. Besides, what constitutes an extended period?

All new units sitting in dealer lots have no slide supports and on a weekend they can have many people walking through them. Some of these RV browsers weigh a lot more than a heavyweight boxer and you don't hear of slide problems that often. The posts above are all correct, if your coach settles and your slide doesn't, you are going to do some real damage.

A few words from the Horse's mouth...."Absolutely NOT!!!!"
The Horse in this case is the slide manufacturer "Lippert Industries". They are also the frame manufacturer and being so are also the "final word" on any slide or frame warranty issues.
The reason is all the replies you have already read above.

Glenn summed it up the best. No way! My dealer even recommended against it.
Good luck on your first trip. It is always a fun time.

Agree with the other posters...another case of a lousy outdated owner's manual.

MOC Forum is best for problems, information and what have you. The manual is just a generalization and not to be taken verbatem.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Randye, Keystone does not recommend slide supports. There was a period of time in which they manual did say as yours does. As soon as it was pointed out to them by this forum they removed that statement. Or so I'm told.
I also would not recommend them. The slides are plenty strong. At one of the factory tours our tour guide walked on top of a slide to show how strong it is. Using a support gains you nothing in my opinion and opens you to potential slide damage. And that would not be covered by warranty, by the way.
This all is my opinion, of course.

It looks like camperworld will have to take back the slide support jacks, or I hope they will. I might be able to revamp them into something else. Thanks for your honest advice. Randye

I started out using the jacks as recommended by the dealer when we bought the 3500RL in Nov. 2005. Only used them a couple of times and didn't see they really helped much. Also its a pain to climb under all 3 slides to put the jacks in place and to take them down when moving to a new spot. So, haven't used them in the last 8 months and everything is still working fine. Anyone interested in a set of slide jacks? I agree with all the ideas posted on MOC. Good Luck, Bob
