Air circulation

I notice that under the steps, going to the bedroom, the wood panel is a grill type, thereby letting air directly into the basement area (Where the furnace and converter is). Doesn't this create a cold draft in the Montana? Is this necessary?

It is really just part of the return air system, not open to the outside. (In my 3400RL, not familiar with your unit, But should be the same.)

that is the return air on your furnance , with out that you get no heat as you can't push air into a space if you don't take some out , think if you put on your socks , the air has to come out as the foot goes in
