US Military Campgrounds & RV Parks

What ID is used to get into the Military RV Parks? Can you use the Military Reserve ID (red) or DD214 issued when discharged?

We have found that you can not access military RV parks or campgrounds unless you are active duty, retired military, or have a 100% disability. Sad but true, although we still get our VA discount at some RV parks.

thanks for your response. Yes it is sad because there are many veterans who served. I left the same question at the US Military Campgrounds and RV parks website http://www.militarycampgrounds.us/milcamps and they finally posted the answer same as your response. We will stay at good sam, koa, route 66 and national parks RV resorts and campgrounds. Maybe we will meet along the way!!

If you retired through DOD you may also use the campgrounds.

If you have a Red ID card saying you are either currently in the National Guard/Reserves or a Gray Area Retiree (retired from reserves but not eligible for retired pay) you are eligible to use Military MWR facilities on a space available basis. In some cases you may be put behind others that have higher priority like active duty, etc.. Veterans that are not retired military or part of the National Guard/Reserve forces are not eligible unless they are 100% disabled or a DoD employee.

Also if DoD contractor sometimes your DBIDS is OK. But generally a CAC card is required.
DBIDS = Defense Biometric Identification System ID
CAC = Common Access Card ID

I would not say, "sad but true." The guys who are still on active duty or retired have earned that benefit.

IMOP any one who served and has an honorable discharge should still have the benefit, rather than not had served at all or had a dishonorable discharge.

Some of the benefits need to be reserved for those on active duty or those that made a career and retired. Otherwise it would be diluted to the point that no one gets much.

I stay at Camp Pendelton (San Ofre) when I visit grand kids in Orange Co., CA. It is on the beach at a GREAT surfing spot. Active duty get to reserve spots further in advance than us retired ones. One can also stay at the main base, also on the beach but not so great. Costs are about the same as KOA. Military ID required to even continue breathing near or in the gate.

I am retired Air Force and we try to stay in as many military campgrounds as possible. We are seeing a great many military campgrounds now accepting the general public. We are currently staying at Grassy Pond Moody Air Force Base and they do allow civilians to stay here. Talking to the folks at these campgrounds we have learned that many of the campgrounds are not being utilized enough (therefore not enough funds) by military folks so they are opening up to others. MilitaryCampgrounds.us does a good job, but it also helps to check with each of the services - i.e. http://www.dodlodging.net/default.aspx
