Surge protectors

Just curious what model people recommend. Should I go with a hard wired or would a portable suffice?

Progressive comes with life time warranty.
And they do stand behind it. Worth the cost.

I use the plug in unit - but if I had it to do again I would get it installed.

I use the 50a Progressive hard wire with external display. Have it right next to the breaker box so I can see power condition prior to turning on main breaker and it can not walk away while I'm out and about.

Just so I understand...the protector is installed inside your rig, next to your panel...you flip a breaker to apply the power, just as you would flip the breaker on the pole? I was wondering where the hard wired ones get mounted.

I have a hard wired EMS 50. I also carry a portable. The hard wired gave its life a couple years ago to protect my rig. I bought a portable TO use until the hardwired was repaired

Started with a Portable, but changed to Hardwired on next unit, was always worried about forgetting and leaving it on the post.
Love the remote internal display, especially if playing the power management game when on a 15 or 30 amp site.

Progressive Industries 50 amp Portable unit. Best unit on the market and well worth the cost! Life time warranty! I prefer the portable unit in case you ever switch rigs. I can also plug it into the power stand to test it before I back into a space to make sure the power there is ok before I commit to the site. Mine has been used on 3 different rigs so far.

Portable Progressive EMS for me also. Expensive, but it's saved us twice from a miss wired pedestal. That more than paid for it.

I too have the Progressive HW50C (hardwired). I had considered the portable unit but didn't want to take the chance of forgetting it at a campsite. That would be just like flushing money down the drain plus I'd have to spend more money on a new one. I have wired the HW50C so that if I ever purchase another unit, I can remove it and use it on the new RV.

I use a portable surge protector.
If a hard wired protector gives its life for your rig, your rig has no power.
If a potable protector gives its life for your rig, change sites and plug in.
For about the price of a hard wired protector you could have a portable and a spare.

I have used a portable unit for 9 years and it is locked to the end of my 50A cable with pad lock. Not much of a chance that I will drive off without it. Works well for us. I do recommend it in either configuration--hardwired or portable.

My first two rigs I had the protection hard wired. We were full time and traveling a lot so I felt it was worth it. Now we have a portable plug in with our MH. I would never never camp without one!

Portable Camco 50amp surge protector for me. Wouldn't be without some sort of protection. Choose whatever style you feel fits your needs. I do believe that the portables are less expensive and will perform the same duties as the hard wired.

I also purchased a Progressive 50 amp hard wired unit. Not all that hard to install and I do enjoy the piece of mind it brings. Jerry if I remember correctly you can bypass it if something happened to it, I could also just bypass it with out any special tools. If anyone was real worried they could us a couple of switches and be able to bypass it with minimal effort. In my case I wouldn't want to stay at the same location that caused it to quit working. It was nice to know the voltage line drop at various RV Parks and the different sites. As stated earlier I was on a 30 amp site in Leavenworth Washington right on the bank of Icicle Creek in August last summer. Somewhere around 105 degrees outside and we had been on the road for two and a half hours after leaving my work location and the unit was smoking hot. I could only run one AC unit and it was taking forever to cool down enough to put the dogs inside. I finally started my generator and fired up both AC units which brought a employee over to remind me that was not allowed. I commented that in the heat with all the ac's running we had significant voltage drop. He said it was my 50 amp cord causing it. After i showed him the voltage he commented to get the unit cooled down and then please shut off the generator to which I was happy to do. The pointe is voltage information and the protection of your units electronics is important to me.

We use the Progressive portable. Pull up to a site & plugin the unit before starting setup. Has saved us twice from serious problems.
Simply buy a good Master lock & heavy 3 foot link chain to wrap around the electrical box.
Well worth the money.

I prefer the Progressive hard-wired model. Can't drive off and forget it and if trading campers only takes a few minutes to remove and reinstall in the new rig. We have already done it once.
