A while back we purchased a new and much smaller TT to see if we wanted to get back into the camping thing after being away for a good while. It was a bottom of the line "lite" model with the MSRP a whopping $13k...and we paid much less. However, this little 'starter' model camper had a Parallax 45 amp converter with a fully functional three stage smart charger. I now discover my new 2007 Montana has the cheaper model converter and I must go purchase and install a "Smart Controller" so my $60k Montana will take as good care of my battery as the 'starter' TT did.

It's not the small amount of money or the inconvenience that irritates me, it's the fact that Keystone is willing to cut a corner for a lousy $25. A lot more than $25 worth of good will was lost since every one of us must do the same thing...or risk ruining our batteries.

I've been wondering about this since reading that other thread. Our 2003 Montana has the parallax and it does a good job of maintaining the battery without modification. We're about to take delivery on a new Montana and this has me concerned. Is it truly fact that the converter in the new ones will overcharge the battery if I don't add this $25 module?

No, it won't overcharge it, but it will not have the sensitivity to give it the best charge, that is in the strictest sense, it is overcharging a little; did you go to the www.iotaengineering.com site? read about the IQ Smart charger there.
That will answer your questions better than my fumbling around.
