A RV fridge will run on either 120V or 12V. In either case, there must be 12V present for the control board to work. Trying to run with a dead, or no, battery doe not work.
A residential fridge must have 120V and does not need 12V if running off of shore power. Obviously it needs 12V from the batteries to power the inverter and have it supply 120V in lieu of share power.
