Towing RV's for manufactures
Does anyone tow RV's for manufactures? I have been thinking about this some time, and saw an advertisement on TV for Star Fleet Trucking. Looked at their web site and this is what they do. Sounds good if you like to travel.
Just wondering if anyone had any experience doing this, and if one could make a decent living doing this.
Thanks, Ron

Have met several people who used to do it. None of them felt they made money at it. Big problem was forgetting about the depreciating condition of their tow vehicle.

Hi
You also fall under the Commercial Vehicle regulations that require commercial insurance, driver’s license, and apportioned license tag for the TV.
All very costly.
My brother just tried to renew his CDL when the cost exceeded $300 and he was going to have to spend an additional $300 to validate his medical he gave up. If I decide to keep my Class A CDL when it comes up for renewal the cost will approach $1,000.00 in Florida.
The apportioned license tag will be in the cost range of $1,000.00.
The insurance is a wild card depending on where you register your TV.
If they pay $1.02 per mile and a fuel surcharge when the fuel goes back up you would do OK if you can drive at least 500 miles a day 5 days a week.
I have a friend that just traded in his 2010 Durmax Silverado with 600,000 miles on it for a new Silverado and he says he is doing well using the 1 ton truck to haul commercial loads.

We also have met a couple of folks who quit doing it. Expected to run 600 miles a day, of course could not use the towed unit requiring separate sleeping arrangements, and flat mileage paid barely covered expenses.

I spoke to a guy that was doing this. Both he and his wife were driving 2 rigs. I am pretty sure he said they could sleep in the rig but that was all. He said they did 2 trips a month and usually ended up somewhere on the West coast near home. It sort of sounded like you make enough to pay expenses and maybe $500 left over for the month to pay depreciation - didn't think about insurance and license fees tho.
They just liked seeing the country doing this, I think.

In the mid 90's, I bought a new truck and leased to a local transport company. I ran the truck both full and part time for 2 years. All I accomplished was ruining a perfectly good GMC and wore myself to a frazzle. That is why right now, if you drive around Elkhart, Lagrange and Kosciusko counties in Indiana, you will see hundreds of units setting and waiting in fields for delivery to dealers all over North America. You cannot make a living doing this full time! I am seeing more and more dealers using their own trucks to come and get their units.
It is fun to do it part time with 2 or 3 runs a month to see the country but, that's it. You'll barely make a truck payment. If the truck is free and clear then knock yourself out!

A couple years ago I started putting pin-to-paper trying to figure out if you could make some money. Being an Illinois resident my CDL was not going to be very much, tags and federal authority wasn't going to break me either. But based on what they were offering on-line per mile, you would be working for about $5.00 an hour after you figured all your expenses, truck maintenance, and depreciation.
I suppose it would be a way to see some of the country at a very quick pace, but it didn't look like you could make any money at it.
