RVIA

Who is the RVIA and are they an organization only for the RV manufacturers or is there a consumer side of this organization?

What is RVIA

They are an association for the RV Manufacturers and there is no consumer side.

They are advisory in nature with no enforcement power and no regulatory power.

I think non-compliance with their regulations may lead to expulsion from the club. Sort of, maybe, a little enforcement power in that means.

"As members of RVIA, manufacturers who display the seal must self-certify compliance with more than 500 safety specifications for electrical, plumbing, heating and fire and life safety established under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A119.2 Standard for Recreational Vehicles. Manufacturers are subject to periodic, unannounced plant inspections by RVIA representatives to audit their compliance. Members who fail to maintain an acceptable level of compliance can be expelled from the association, which prohibits them from displaying the RVIA seal on their products."

What you state is true.. They could be expelled from RVIA if they do not comply with the RECOMMENDED specifications. However they have no enforcement power to make them comply. They just lose the seal. The seal is there to make the uninformed consumer think they are complying. All PR..no teeth..

When I discussed GVWR ratings with Keystone they told me they have to use the RVIA formula for GVWR to maintain their membership and ability to show the seal. By the way, that formula for GVWR is axle ratings plus estimated tongue/hitch weight. They told me that's the reason and the only reason the GVWR went up on the Montanas when they started using the higher rated axles.
