50 amp power cable

My Montana, and others I have seen have the connection for the 50 amp power cable on the side or rear. These cables are heavy and after being plugged in, put a lot of pressure on the connector and the wire casing. This will eventually cause the casing to separate from the connection leaving exposed wires. I purchased a 90 degree adaptor which has takes the weight off the cable. The adaptor, 1RPC50RV is available at Camping World, Amazon.com and Walmart on line. This beats resealing or replacing the cable. By the way, they have a 40 amp version also.

Have had one for the last 9 years, 8 of them full time with no problems from the cords whatsoever.

I will look at this a good addition.

I would also suggest looking at a 50amp surge protector. There are a few brands out there. I’m happy with this one.

If it were me, I'd move up to a Progressive industries EMS. Much more information and much better customer service.

You might try looking on E-Bay or Amazon for used 90 degree adapter. i found one for $35 and a little for shipping. If I remember right they are around $100 or more new. This was a 50 amp.

Sine we are long timers and as close to full time as you can get the only time we are not hooked to shore power is when we are in travel status. We had both of the OEM straight in cords fail on both our Montana's. We replaced with the 90's.

Seeing this makes me scratch me head and ask WHY they make these thing with these design/engineering flaws in the first place? I saw a similar thing on one of the inverter generators where the 30 amp plug was oriented where it placed the same strain on both the plug and the cord. At least on the generator you could unscrew the plug, rotate it, screw it back in and make it so the cord hung straight down instead of parallel to the ground.

It does make you wonder. The plug for mine is off the back of the rig and always requires a 180 deg redirect to get to the power connection usually at midpoint around the water/sewer connections.

I'm confused, my 2018 305RL came with a 90 degree connector on the female (coach) end of the 50 amp cable.

I don't use my 50 amp cord and found it was too bulky. I only have one air conditioner so I bought a 30 amp cord and it's worked fine with no blown fuses. A much easier cord to work with.

90 on 50 amp cable

watch out for the indexing on the cable - I ordered a 90 as it just makes sense, but when I plugged it in to RV the 90 took the cable to the right rather than down like I wanted. Next time I unhook I will see about rotating the plug on the RV another 90 such that it will hang down when screwed on.

That has happen to several of us. The plug on the 5'er is easy to rotate.
