In 2011 we traveled the NE and Maritime Canada. To tour NYC, we chose to stay at the KOA in Copake, NY. Yes, it is about 2 hours from NYC but we took a tour bus directly to NYC and had a great day seeing the major sights. After seeing the bus driver get into the city--I was very glad to not be driving!
Next we moved to Blairstown, NJ, and stayed at the Triplebrook Camping Resort. We did this to position ourselves to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Is. Worked great because we were also traveling to the Statue/Ellis on Saturday--virtually no traffic. Took the ferry from NJ to the Statue/Ellis--did family history stuff--easy drive home. Any questions, send an email or PM.

The closest RV park to NYC is Liberty Harbor RV and Marina.

This is basically just a big parking lot. Electricity and water but to sewer. They do have a dump station on site.

We stayed there in July and the only problem was that the power would go off all the time in the afternoon and evening.

I would stay there again but no in AC season.

The park is right across the water from ground zero.

There is a nice campground outside Newburgh, believe it was a KOA. We have stayed there twice.
