Alaska Plans

We are planning a trip to Fairbanks and Homer during the summer of 2012. How many of you have made this trip with your Monty? Using the AlCan Highway? I am worried that the trip might beat our 3075 up too bad. So, I am curious if the road is paved all the way (not counting potholes). We are planning on running up I-15 to the border, then to Dawson Creek, then on to Fairbanks with the return down through B.C. to Washington.

Has anyone taken this route? If so, what were your experiences? Any problems with the Monty? Rough roads? Rough weather?

We will be ordering the "Milepost" soon and plan to use it extensively on the trip.

Also, has anyone made the trip with organized tours, such as Caraventures (Good Sam), Tracks to Adventure, Alaska Caravans, or RV Alaska Tours?

Caravans work for some folks. Good news is they provide all logistics/arrangements, tech support, and you travel w/a bunch of folks. Bad news is, you follow their schedule and have little flexibility. Whatever works for you. In case you're interested, we went the opposite route you mentioned (up thru BC, and back through Yukon/Alberta. You can check our 2005 trip accounts at the link below in signature.

Have completed that trip four times; in 1972 with a station wagon car (remember them); 1989 with a 4X4 truck and camper, 1996 with a group of us in three units ( 5th wheels and campers) then in 2008 by air.( non with a Monty 5th wheel though).
I would not do a caravan because both the Yukon and Alaska are very relaxed and a "do as you want" atmosphere; there may be areas that you wish to stay longer and in a caravan that is hard to do.
Today the roads are excellent all the way to Anchorage and Fairbanks.
If you go to "Top of the World", different story, you will travel all types of roads, gravel, sand, rock, some asphalt, and some potholes yes, but take your time it is a beautiful country.
There is a lot to see and you literally have 22 hours of daylight every day in the summer months to see!!
We have many relatives in the Yukon and they love the country and that is why we continue to go back!
P.M. me if you need any questions answered and I will try my best to help.

We did Alaska on our own with our 3075 in the summer of 2008. We even did the Top of the World Highway. You can read about it on our blog the dates are June 1, 2008 thru October 1, 2008.

The roads that are actually in Alaska are better than a lot of roads in the lower 48. The worst stretch is from Haines Junction, Yukon to Tok, Alaska due to frost heaves.

The key to driving to and from Alaska is to SLOW DOWN. There are no 65 mph highways. When you see construction or frost heaves drive even slower.

We have never caravaned but, an advantage would be you never have to worry about where you are going or where you are going to stay next. The disadvantage is if you don't like the place they pick you have no choice.

The real advantage to not being with a caravan is that you can extend your stay at a place you like or if the weather is bad.

When we went in 2008 we had already been to both Fairbanks and Homer so only planned to spend a few days in each of them. The weather in Fairbanks was the best we had all summer so we stayed there for two weeks. Homer was paradise, we extended our stay there to three weeks and would have stayed longer but, it was almost Labor Day.
