To turbo or not to turbo that's the question

Hi,
On my least trip during Memorial Day weekend I had a weird experience. After stopping for refueling I noticed that I had no power due to no turbo (turbo boost gage was showing zero). Concerned with possibility of not being able to pull the Monty up steep grades I was looking for a different more flat route to my destination, but after a while I noticed that I was getting some power back and I decided to continue my trip as planned. I made all of the steep hills to my destinations without a mayor problem. The next day my turbo was back to normal and still is preforming well. My question here is that maybe someone else has had a similar situation and can lead me to the problem.
Thanks

Never had that prob Jerzy. Normaly when the turbo goes its gone. I know ya gotta keep your oil clean and the level within the lines cuz the turbo needs the proper pressure to function correctly. Get it checked out before ya have some costly repairs.

The turbo is hydraulically controlled useing engine oil pressure. All this is controlled by the CPU. If the "Check Engine" light did not come on it most likely is not a electrical problem rather a mechanical problem.

Jerzy,

That is wierd - I thought the turbo was complety exhaust driven and couldn't fail. Thanks for straightening that out for me Rick - must be more sophisticated than I thought.

I received these tech bulletins from Kim on another post
http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/F-350_main...SBs_FRAME.html
there were a few items in there about buildup in the turbo causing it fail.

Thanks everybody for the quick response and advices. I will further investigate this problem and if I find something
I will post it here. One thing I want to add , that check engine light was not on at all. I had a similar problem last
year and the dealer had to replace a turbo boost sensor , but that time my engine check light was on.

I had a solonoid fail in the turbo of my 04 PSD . This solonoid moved the variable vanes on the turbo. I do know a complete turbo sells for almost 6000 dollars CAD and I am very glad I don't have one in my V10 because I plan on keeping this truck long after warranty runs out.

On edit , my check engine light never came on.

The varible pitch turbo is how Ford is able to get such a wide power band. Great for power and great when it works, but when it does go out...
We had to replace one recently on one of the work trucks, price was about $1600.00 reworked.

$1600.00 for the turbo or a solenoid.

Just an update about my turbo problem. Finally after having on and off turbo while towing the turbo stopped working.
The engine light went on and the next day I took my truck to the dealer. After two days at the dealership I got my truck back.
According to dealer the turbo vgt vaines where jammed up. They used a carb cleaner to free those vaines and I have turbo boost back.
This past weekend I went camping and I noticed that my mpg dropped from around 12.5 mpg to about 9 mpg right now. I am just wondering
is the drop in mpg has something to do with the turbo fix? Maybe someone has any idea about this situation?

Jerzy54 -
I'm sure not having the turbo probably improved your mileage. I remember guys with the old ford diesels before the turbo used to brag about 20mpg or so.
