Buying RV prior to Tow Vehicle

Since my husband just leased a new Ford F150 a few months ago, we are not in a position to buy a new truck to pull a new, heavier RV. We are not looking at buying an RV immediately, probably not for a year or more, but we may be in a position to buy one before we can buy the TV we need to haul it. However, we will be buying the RV to live in year-round locally at least for the first couple years. We thought that we could hire someone to tow our new RV once or twice, (if we decided to change parks), until we can get the appropriate TV. As long as we plan on staying in one spot mainly, do you see any problem with this???

Wannabe~
I would not let the lack of a tow vehicle stop you from buying a 5th wheel. Most rv dealerships would be more than willing to tow your new rig to a rv park. (Free or for a minimal charge). If you know anyone who already has a 5th wheel, maybe buying them a case of beer or dinner would be a good trade for hauling your new coach. There are many options for you, just be creative...

Thanks Montana Sky. You all are just great here - I just can't believe it! I figured someone would be ROFL when they read my post (and maybe they will be but that's okay-lol). I was very hesitant to post, thinking you all think we are totally crazy! LOL Well, maybe we are, I don't know, but there are so many variables in our situation that we just don't know WHEN we might be purchasing the new RV. I know it won't be this year for sure and maybe not even next year but hopefully!

BTW, I have spent hours reading the forum posts and have many hours/days yet to spend going through posts but from what I have read about the Keystone Montana's I feel very strongly that that IS the model of 5er for us. Now, just deciding on a floorplan. There are only a couple that would suit our needs so it shouldn't be too hard - not until we walk inside them anyway. We may be going to one of the dealers in our state this weekend and we also will begin visiting the RV parks we may be interested in. We will camp in them with the RV we have now to get a better feel of where we might want to stay for several months at a time.

BTW, I think we have a couple friends that would be more than happy to tow our RV for us for a case of beer and/or a dinner or cook-out and gas!

Sure am glad I found this wonderful site! This is one of the nicest forums I have ever been on! Thank you for allowing me to post and ask all my stupid questions.

Wannabe..your thinking is on track..You know your present TV is to small. You are not planning to tow the new camper till you get the proper TV..so knowing that I would say go ahead and purchase the camper of your choice then you will know what tv to purchse. You will have no problem getting it pulled to your site..The dealership should do that as part of the camper deal..if not ask for a MOC member nearby..I am sure they would pull it to your site

Even up here in Canada that same situation exists. We have a seasonal lot next to a National Park and many of the people who spend May till September end there don't even own a truck. In fact older friends of ours just sold there truck because they only used it to pull the rig to the seasonal and back in fall. They know they can call on any one of about a dozen of us to do the deed for them, oh and are we to be getting FREE FOOD and BEER or just the BEER?

Hey, we pay for your gas, cook ya whatever you would like, AND provide the beer!

Glad to hear that this is not such an inconceivable idea.

You are always safer buying the RV first, then you know for sure what size TV you need. I have a 2007 3400RL sitting down in our RV storage lot...been there three weeks...my new truck is due 'any day now.'

WFT, what impresses me is that you have a plan. You know what you want to do, you know what it will take, you know you cannot accomplish all of it immediately but you will not let that stop you. You came up with some ideas to make it work.

I think the idea of hiring someone to move it a reasonable distance is a good one. Someone in your park might be willing to do it. You might be sure you're covered on insurance when someone else tows it, just in case.

A few years ago I remember talking with a couple who did that same thing, hired someone to move theirs twice a year. Except they went south for the winter and north for the summer by a thousand miles or so. I do not know what it cost them.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Wannabe,

My current 2500HD gasser is probably a little stretch to pull my Monty, but I can only afford one thing at a time so unless I hit the lotto (slim chance, I hardly ever buy a ticket) I'll probably make it work for another couple of years. So I understand where you're coming from. I'm eight years from retirement so I want to buy a new Chevrolet Durmax as soon as I can, and then buy another right before retirement. Of course some where in there we'll probably want to get a new Monty too!

Which gasser do you have? The 8.1 would work fine. Problem with the 6.0 is the GCWR of 16,000...especially at your altitude.

Steve, I just wanted to tell you how much your kind, supportive words meant to me. I was afraid anyone I shared this with would have thought I lost my mind completely.

I wanted to add that I have looked into insurance and the company we get all our ins. through is where my sweet niece works and she is pretty good at getting us the most bang for our buck within her capabilities anyway. She quoted us a price of under $900 a year through Progressive based on the cost of replacement of the RV (MSRP) and cost of replacement of the contents up to $20,000, towing up to 1000 miles per year (which won't be happening the first couple years anyway so she said the quote would be lower if we were to stay in one place), $300,000 in personal liability, a really good towing/roadside assistance pkg. with emergency expenses, and this is based on us not owning a home/stick house. Does this sound like a well-rounded and reasonable policy?

Hey Wannabe Full-Time,
Totally understand your situation and thinking, Have you tried signing in on the MOCTAP web site? You might find someone in your area that would be willing to tow. Best of luck!

I think we have someone locally that can do this for us. They have a 350 diesel and a large 5er they tow so think we will be able to hire them reasonably if we do decide to do this. Thanks for the great suggestion though!

The policy sounds good but the price seems a bit high. But maybe that depends on your state of residency. Our policy is very similar except I'm not sure how much road service we have on that policy. We have road service through Good Sam for less than $100 per year. I renewed our fulltimers policy with the things you listed last February at an annual rate of $601. Our rig is a 2003 so that might play a role, also.

Thanks for the feedback. Sure appreciate it. I think too we were quoted higher than it would end up being as we won't be towing it around for a couple years if we do decide to do this. Like you said too the State your are in and the year of the RV would play a role as well no doubt. Nice to get an idea if we are in the ballpark.

I know it is less if you have a home owners (stick house as well) policy.

Thanks again.

Hi. It seems you are worried about dumb questions. As a new "gonna-be" on this forum, I hope I can put that worry into perspective.
I used to teach a lot of adult classes (30 - 50 per year). I always had adult students who were afraid to participate due to the "dumb question phobia."
I always explained, at the start of classes that there were, indeed, dumb questions; that if you look in the dictionary, dumb is defined as "mute or unspoken," and of course a question is asking something.
Put these two together and you get a dumb question: one that is unasked. That is the only dumb question.
Be assured, others either wanted to ask it and couldn't or didn't even think to ask that question.
I have asked some very "unusual" questions here and no one has laughed yet (at least not publicly - lol).
Keep asking. We all learn from it.
Larry
