Problem with black tank valve leaking

I went to dump the black tank the last weekend we went camping and when I opened the sewer cap to attach the sewer hose to dump, I got a waterfall of a mess! The valve was in the closed position and I just figured on the previous dump and flush something got lodged in the valve seat and did not close completely. I flushed the black tank for a long time to not have this problem again. Has anyone had this problem before and if so, was it the valve itself or the cable to close the valve? We are going camping on Labor Day weekend and will see if it cleared up when I dump and flush. I did buy a sewer cap with a 3/4" hose adapter and attached a lightweight valve for control if the sewer header is full again.

Historically, have had tank leakage because of both.

I just had the same problem. The cable would barely close the valve with much pushing. And then it still leaked. Took it to a dealer in Whitehorse, YT and he spent an hour dropping the belly and took the valve apart. Said the 4 bolts holding the pieces together were too tight and restricted the valve. I thought this sounded like a bit of baloney, but even tho it pushed hard, it did close all the way after that. Good luck.

I had similar problems until I put on a Flush King. Now after filling and rinsing the black tank a couple of times I close the Flush King valve, turn the water back on, and as it back flows into the black tank I close the black tank valve. By doing this it seems to keep any left over small particles out of the black tank valve opening, plus it puts a gallon or two of fresh water into my recently emptied black tank to start another week with. Never had any drips since doing this, but then again the Flush King valve stays closed when traveling so I never have to unscrew any type of cap when installing sewer hose.

Put a twist-on valve at the discharge point and you will never have the messy problem again. Gives you more control.

2X the twist on valve. But a lot of times that water that collects at the end of the dump is just water that did not drain out of the piping. It takes a long time for all the water in the pipes to drain out.

After flushing the tank many times with the valve open full, half way, and cracked a little the valve appears to not hold water with water in the tank and the valve closed. My next job was to scope out how to get to the valve to change it out. We have a 3711fl and it looked pretty involved to get the underbelly removed to r+r the black tank valve. Before tackling that, I checked here to see if I had any responses to my topic and the suggestion of installing the twist valve peeked my interest. First I had to find out what a twist valve was and it is the easiest and less time consuming fix. Thank you so much for your input and suggestions. The Valterra Twist Valve was ordered from Amazon and I will have it by Thursday. Thank you all for your help!

Had the same issues. Dropped the belly pan ( it's installed with nails not screws) and replaced the Bristol Lassalle valves with Valterra valves. Original cables are fixed length so extra cable is coiled up adding pressure to operate valves. Valterra valves let you cut cable to length so you can have short smooth runs and the cables are crimped better. had original cable pull apart. I took the twist on valve they sell and cut it and the end of sewer pipe and glued it on permanently.

Had the same problem after a too quick dump and flush. pulled the valve and found the dreaded TP remains blocking the valve plate. It appeared closed but was not seating properly. Not a pleasant job but not difficult. Now I am religious about back-flushing with some water out of the gray tank.

Same problem with our new 310RE plus the added benefit of having the black tank flush fail to work. Bought a twist-on valve to prevent future "surprises" until I can get it fixed under warranty.

Had the same problem on my 2012 and my new 2016 3160RL. I went to camping world and for less than $30 bought a twist on valve to stop the leaks. These cable valves never work bad design.

Had the same problem. First repair was Camping World replacing the valve and cable. I still had the problem. Second time, with arguing, was them dropping the under belly again and thoroughly inspecting the valve. They said it does not leak.

I have determined that all the black tank stuff does not exit probably because it is furthest from the discharge pipe. I have opened the discharge pipe, let the stuff leak (that I thought was a leaking valve), drove to the camp site, and opened it again with nothing coming out even so I have several gallons of water in the black tank.

I think there must be a low spot or something in the line. So I have installed the same twist valve as others and don't have a problem anymore.

Had a terrible time with mine leaking. The black tank valve was getting to be a bear to open or close. While working to free up the cable, it broke off in my hand. Luckily for me, I had put a gated valve on the discharge to avoid the little surprises. The cable for the valve was twisted wire, it appeared that it got bound up and crimped and was rusty. Ordered a new cable, single steel cable, and will be replacing this weekend. Don't want any type of water sitting in the exposed pipe when it gets cold. Plan on getting self tapping screws to replace the ridiculous nails that hold up the coroplast.

Yup like some others, I put a valve shutoff at the sewer. Now removing the cap never has any surprises. I have forgotten to close a gray valve or two once or twice.

Fortunately, the black valve I check and recheck because I never want to risk a mishap with the black. Then I always need to drain the gray tanks, so the last ones I use (the gray or galley) are the only ones I might have a chance to mess up since there are two of them more chance of getting interrupted. The valve at the sewer outlet has helped eliminate that foulup. Before removing all the hoses, that valve gets closed.
