I leave both on and check every few days. After a while you will get a sense of how much propane you use and the frequency. I hate to run out (usually o'dark 30) and then have to wait for the new tank to refill the lines.
Checking the propane status is just like checking the level of the black tank, the level of grey/shower tank,, fuel in the vehicle, tire pressure, open/closed windows, quantity of beer in the cooler, etc. which one needs to do periodically.
